To rehabilitate the auditorium of the Regional Conservatorium of Musicof Versailles, which has become dilapidated and restore it to the prestigeit deserves, the project consisted in adding new spaces to the existingvolume and giving the feeling that they are larger than they do not appearthere. Our next design-build venture with authentic living principles, this custom residence overlooking Ladybird Lake utilizes tricks from local regulatory hurdles to maximize its use and value. The regulations limited the size of the project to a single 550 sf Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), however, by adding a third detached dwelling structure, and creating basements, we are able to create a 1425 sf multi-unit compound.  ​ Underground conditioned spaces allow us to have a detached sound-proof music studio connected to the master suite via private sunken garden patio. In 2014 the illustrious Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool, commissioned a new music centre to be designed by Mathews + Associates Architects. Currently, the school hosts one of the largest music departments in the country with 240 high school learners who are taught musical theory and may choose to play an instrument of their choice. This new opera house is located on Fenyang and Huaihai Road. The building has a great public entrance at the corner of these two important streets of the historical French district. Rather than a massive unique building the opera is built as a sequence of pavilions, following the rhythm and the height of the existing architecture including, on Fenyang road the existing recent building of the conservatory. The N M Bodecker Foundation is a creative house balancing both natural and built environments. At its core, this project aims to inspire action and activity. With a series of informal performance spaces, an indoor skate park, and an outdoor fire pit. FTL designed the original tensile bandshell over twenty years ago and the producers of the events decided to upgrade the facility with a larger one as the PBS, 'A Capitol Fourth' and 'National Memorial Day Concert' has become major televsion events. The design of the new structure uses a saddle shape to project and balance sound from the different musical ensembles including the entire National Symphony Orchestra. The roof membrane also acts as a light canvas for the lighting and video projection which is an intricate part of the television experience.  More
