The High Garden temporary pavilion is a real estate showroom for an apartment tower with a shopping center in Porto Alegre, RS. The challenge here was to emphasize the new street corner that would be built with the implementation of the development. The pavilion’s shape takes advantage of this new urban situation with a roof that rises towards the corner. A full height glass corner on a raised podium opens onto the street and provides access to the space. Akb Architects has created a multi-generational family cottage clad in rough-sawn cedar boards and cedar shakes to merge with the northern Ontario terrain of windswept trees and Pre-Cambrian bedrock. The 7,500-square-foot residence comprises three interconnected volumes that form an interior of cozy spaces and open rooms with spectacular views of a freshwater lake. The Rock Creek House is an adaptive re-use project of a 1920’s brick structure that was originally composed of two floors, with a mechanical basement and attic. This adaptation leverages the robustness of the existing structure to capture the attic and basement to double the house’s size, while expanding its functions into the landscape. While the northern street façade remains relatively intact --formal, insular, and composed-- the southern exposure to Rock Creek is made more generous.
