Indie Labs is the product of a collaboration between two studios: StudioSC, based in New York City, and Base Taller, based in Medellín, Colombia. With deep personal and professional ties to Medellín, StudioSC was invited to join the design team for a ground-up office building just outside the city center, perched at the edge of a natural preserve. The site’s sharply triangular geometry, dictated further by setback requirements, presented both a constraint and a starting point. The challenge of transforming a narrow, historic townhouse on New York’s Upper West Side into a modern, open space inspired us to reinterpret the loft concept, resulting in a vertical loft that seamlessly connects both horizontal and vertical planes. This project was a full home renovation of an Upper West Side classic 8 pre-war apartment, meaning we updated all the flooring, renovated the kitchen, bathrooms, closets, and office space, then painted throughout. The cherry on top: we maintained and enhanced the pre-war charm with restoration and refinishing work throughout the apartment. This duplex apartment in Tribeca offers breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the downtown Manhattan skyline. Our design sought to preserve the original layout’s open, airy feel while providing privacy for a family of four with two young children. To make the most of the panoramic city views, the layout is carefully organized along the perimeter, with storage and secondary spaces integrated into the apartment's core. On the lower floor, the bedrooms and family area are centered around a compact storage volume. This historic carriage house on Verandah Place in Carroll Gardens, dating back to the late 1800s, had undergone several unsympathetic renovations over the years, leaving only the original facade intact. Our clients, a young couple with three children, envisioned a home that felt both open and airy, yet still intimate. To bring this vision to life, we reimagined the layout to maximize natural light and carefully selected materials that foster warmth and harmony. Our clients, passionate art lovers and collectors, enlisted us to combine two apartments on the 17th floor of a Fifth Avenue building, offering panoramic views of Central Park and the city. Their goal was to create a space that would showcase their art collection—paintings and sculptures—while providing a neutral backdrop. We transformed the original, segmented layout into an open floor plan that evokes the feel of an art gallery. The design serves as a canvas itself, with soft white walls and a concrete floor featuring irregular bronze inserts. For this project, the challenge was to design a space for a family of four, with three bedrooms, within an existing penthouse loft that only had a single west-facing exposure. All bedrooms, the kitchen, living room, and master bathroom needed to receive ample natural light and air. We solved this by introducing a centrally placed light well, which also serves as a lush greenhouse. This verdant space, filled with plants, brings natural light deep into the heart of the home, transforming the light well into a living feature that fosters a serene connection to nature. Located in a historic downtown New York building, this loft has a challenging long and narrow shape, and the clients had a complex set of requirements: Both husband and wife work from home, they frequently entertain large groups, and they often have overnight guests. In addition to the kitchen, dining room, living room and master suite, the program included his and her offices, a den, a guestroom, a sitting/TV room, a second guest space, and space for a large book collection.
