Top 5 office buildings aligning with Paris-Proof carbon targets in the Netherlands
As the architecture and construction sectors work to reduce their climate impact, office buildings are increasingly being designed to meet energy-performance levels compatible with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Often referred to as “Paris-Proof”, these targets require a substantial reduction in operational energy demand alongside a growing emphasis on lowering embodied carbon through material choices and construction methods.
Across Europe, a new generation of workplaces is demonstrating how these ambitions can translate into built form — from the deep renovation of historic structures to large-scale timber offices and highly efficient energy systems. The following projects highlight office buildings tha... More

IKEC de Zevensprong
In the Netherlands, KRFT has completed IKEC De Zevensprong, a Paris-proof school for children with special needs that will serve more than 450 pupils from the Hoorn region. The building is constructed around a radical, lightweight timber structure that is fully demountable and adaptable.
“Making a school Paris Proof is no simple task; you must be radical in every material choice. Thanks to natural materials in the structure, façades and finishes, 2 million kg of CO₂ (285 kg CO₂ per m²) is stored in the building for the long term. At the same time, this limits the embodied carbon to 315 kg CO₂-eq per m².”— Oscar Vos, architect and partner at KRFT

Paris Proof Block
If we want to build and live climate-neutral and regenerative in 2050, we must work proactively towards this right now. GROUP A's think tank CARBONLAB, together with Aveco de Bondt, DGMR, Adviesbureau ABT-Lüning and De Urbanisten, conducted research into what is already possible with today's knowledge. The results are promising. Paris Proof building according to the embodied CO2 budgets of 2030 can be done right now.
GROUP A
Paris Proof Block is an investigation into the technical and architectural potential to realize a complex high-rise and multifunctional building within the DGBC Paris Proof budget for embodied CO2 (GWPa) of 2030 and 2050. Two concepts of an ambitious Program of Requirements show that we can build Paris Proof... More
