Patio House Vijver

A 70’s split-level house with a square ground plan, dark spaces and no relationship to the large garden was transformed into a contemporary home with plenty of daylight and carefully framed views to the beautiful surroundings. The house is located on a corner plot on the edge of a typical Flemish allotment in Diepenbeek and near to the nature reserve De Dijken where the Stiemerbeek and the Kaatsbeek flows into the Demer. In the large open corner garden, there was deliberately no construction to preserve the openness to the neighbourhood and the landscape. The overall footprint of the existing house was reduced and adapted with some clever interventions to fully exploit the qualities of the plot. Jeroen Verrecht Jeroen Verrecht... More

Nature and transparency form a harmonic balance that characterize House in Begur

Surrounded by nature and with a broad view over Catalonia's Costa Brava landscape, Garcés de Seta Bonet architecture studio developed this large patio house (420 m2). Inspired by traditional Roman dwellings, the design concept features a living area around a central space and an exterior nature expressed in a more domesticated way. Adrià Goula The house's exterior recalls a concrete prism or compact piece of artificial stone. Upon entering the house, this perception changes completely, with the walls seeming to break away and any feeling of a monolith vanishing as transparencies between indoor spaces and progression between rooms through to the patio. "When you go inside, the image of nature is reflected everywhere, br... More

Two villas by Atelier Stéphane Fernandez exhibit a subtle yet powerful presence in the landscape

Embedded into the landscape of Aix-en-Provence, France, two villas designed by Atelier Stéphane Fernandez exhibit a subtle yet powerful presence in the landscape, drawing from nature and taking inspiration from elements of Roman architecture that surround.  We are Content(s) – Stéphane Aboudaram With a rustic simplicity that finds inspiration in the nearby 19th century bastides, the villas highlight the relationship between architecture, body, climate, and principles of construction both modern and historic. Recreational farmhouse designed by Danish architecture studio NORRØN embraces Danish ruralism while bridging history and contemporary ways of living

This new recreational farmhouse designed by Danish architecture studio NORRØN embraces Danish ruralism and bridges history and contemporary ways of living. Coined around concepts of biodynamic food production, freely grazing animals and farm to table, the design evokes the region’s vernacular building tradition and inquisitively reinterprets the traditional Danish farmhouse. Torben Eskerod Set in the countryside of rolling hills, the house is organized around a central patio that unites the wings of the building. With cut out gables that rise from the ground and tower the sky, the building stands on a four-legged structure with each leg incorporating an open gate through which the surrounding landscape can is seen. ... Patio house

The design of this residential building is characterized by the presence of three patios, each one having different sizes and functions. The first one we encounter coming from outside separates the master part from the services one. Inside the house the spaces are arranged around a central patio, which is covered by a large skylight. This space contributes to the internal climate well-being, allowing for the natural ventilation of the internal spaces during the summer months and providing solar gains in winter periods. A third patio is dedicated exclusively to the bathroom area. The articulation of the spaces and the arrangement of the openings, which may seem apparently simple, are the result of a careful research. The goal was to define... More

Claudia House

Benimaclet was an orchard village that was absorbed by the city of Valencia in the second half of the last century. In this village houses coexist with small-scale multi-family buildings, as is the case here: a three-storey building, made up of 6 dwellings, which, on the ground floor and through a central access, gives access in the block courtyard to two-storey constructions belonging to each of the dwellings in the building. The intervention that we present consists of the reconstruction of one of these buildings, belonging to one of the dwellings on the ground floor, and its connection with it. The low construction quality and the habitability problems of this building advised its demolition and volumetric reconstruction.   O... More
