The history of Herrengasse in Vienna’s inner city is two thousand years old – formerly the Roman Limes – and the book is still being written: from Michaelerplatz to Freyung the first privately financed »encounter zone« in the city is taking shape, approx. 450 m long, and transferred to the public hand. A win-win situation for all residents and visitors to the city.A new surfacing of natural stone slabs and street profile levelling widens the street, fostering the respectful co-existence of pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers. Pedestrian Zone Wiener Straße
A subtly differentiated surface pattern of differently colored, small-format concrete slabs, integrated into the overall design concept of the city form the “fundamental tone” of the pedestrian zone. Stripes in 3 different gray tones alternate in the Wiener Strasse and formulate an accessible spine in the north-south direction. The adjoining side alleys are graded in color according to their hierarchy. The junction of Johannes von Nepomuk square with the church of St. Peter an der Sperr will be integrated as an extended space.Tree plantings in combination with consumption-free seating areas strengthen the quality of stay. Stephansplatz
Up to 80,000 people frequent Stephansplatz every day. The pavement is forty years old and will be renewed, the square restructured as a whole. The concept merges seamlessly into the part of the pedestrian precinct in the Vienna city centre that was already set up in 2008/09.Outdoor public space is the stage for people’s activities, its subtle yet robust design forming the backdrop for all conceivable usages. The deficit in freely available seating will be resolved, the lighting renewed and improved, the non-directional space of the square planned using the Roman paving technique pattern with differently coloured, flagged granite slabs and ornamental stones in abstract cruciform arrangement. Mill Lane, Leicester
Mill Lane is an area around De Montfort University in Leicester that was redeveloped from a vehicular street to a pedestrianised zone with planting and new street lighting. The contractor Danaher and Walsh who carried out the work commissioned me to photograph it for their website, brochures and award submissions. Since shooting, this project has won three awards, ProCon Leicester, a Leicestershire Joint Consultative Committee Craftsmanship Award and an RICS Infrastructure project award.The objective of the development was to create a relaxing environment around De Montfort University's city centre campus and their new Vijay Patel building.
