Mill Lane is an area around De Montfort University in Leicester that was redeveloped from a vehicular street to a pedestrianised zone with planting and new street lighting. The contractor Danaher and Walsh who carried out the work commissioned me to photograph it for their website, brochures and award submissions. Since shooting, this project has won three awards, ProCon Leicester, a Leicestershire Joint Consultative Committee Craftsmanship Award and an RICS Infrastructure project award.
The objective of the development was to create a relaxing environment around De Montfort University's city centre campus and their new Vijay Patel building. To capture the flora at it's peak, a summer shoot was necessary using dawn and dusk to show the effect of the lighting. Low level catwalk style lighting is used in parts of the project and regular height mast lights with additional bulbs to illuminate planting in other parts. Benches, bicycle racks, decorative litter bins and granite bookends are provided to enable people to enjoy fresh air in this part of the city.
Additionally, this project was a runner-up in the Excellence in Cycling & Walking category at the National Transport Awards.
