In the southern coastal city of Brighton & Hove, England, the new Performing Arts Centre for Brighton College strikes a balance between the monumental and the contemporary. Recognizing the critical need to accommodate its growing academic programs, NYU engaged Davis Brody Bond and KieranTimberlake to replace its one-story Coles Sports Center with a new mixed-use development to hold a diverse array of performing arts programs, rehearsal studios, and performance venues, as well as first-year student and faculty housing. Spacesmith designed and selected all the furnishings for the 735,000 sf building. The project, which won the architectural project competition for the Ted Ankara College Campus with a capacity of 6000 students in 1998, was implemented in 2005 and educational activities have begun. Conceptualized and designed by Semra Uygur and Özcan Uygur, this campus is a city simulation accomplished adopting the principle that education should create its own urban life even if it is in an area remote from the city. Situated in close proximity to existing drama, choir and music programs, Palo Alto High School’s Performing Arts Center creates new, flexible spaces—and new opportunities—for each.   Providing community gathering and meeting areas as well as performance space, the facility is fully equipped with the latest A/V technology, and can accommodate an entire grade group for orientations, lectures and assemblies.   The exterior elevation features traditional design elements, including covered porches and arcades. This $17 Million project includes a 500-seat main hall and 150-seat studio theater.Sustainable Building Strategies:- Exposed southwest walls are covered with ‘green screen’ for cooling and protection.- Broad roof overhang provides protection from sun and rain and reduces glare while promoting indoor / outdoor use of lobby with natural ventilation.- Fly tower utilized to integrate a solar chimney for passive cooling. - Main spaces in the building employ displacement ventilation, taking advantage of the single tiered seating and high volume in the theaters. SPF:architects (SPF:a), an award-winning studio based in Culver City, has released new renderings of their design for the Anaheim Performing Arts Center (APAC), located in Anaheim, California.
