Smokehouse
Smokehouse is a communal dining pavilion nestled within a shaded grove, conceived as an open-air shelter for meals, gatherings, and community meetings. Adjacent to an outdoor kitchen, the structure offers protection from the elements while remaining open and connected to its surroundings.
Designed and built as a community project, the pavilion employs modest materials and simple construction methods. A straightforward A-frame wood structure, clad in cedar shake, rests on a concrete foundation that forms two continuous sunken benches flanking a long communal table. The open-ended form invites movement through the space, while framing views of the grove beyond.

Penn's Landing Pavilion
Once a series of mercantile piers and industrial uses cut off from the city by Interstate 95, Philadelphia’s Delaware River waterfront has been the subject of numerous planning studies over five decades. The new Park at Penn’s Landing will reconnect Philadelphia to its river’s edge by constructing a transformational civic space at the heart of the city’s waterfront. The I-95 Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) project will guide pedestrians from city sidewalks to an 11.5-acre park with a series of public amenities and attractions.

Foster + Partners completes state-of-the-art inpatient facility for Penn Medicine
The PennFIRST integrated project delivery team, consisting of Foster + Partners, HDR, engineers BR+A, LF Driscoll, Balfour Beatty and Penn Medicine, set out to realize the ‘hospital of the future’. To rethink patient care with the wellbeing of staff and patients at the heart of their approach.

The 504 inpatient rooms are user-centered. Patients can use controls that allow for individual comfort and customization. Movement is minimized by creating rooms that are fitted for direct treatments as much as possible.

KOKEDAMA FOREST
Kokedama Forest is a 1,000 SQF miniature sculptural forest consisting of more than 1,200 forestry seedling kokedamas nested within an inverted dome carved out from a fragile and intricate metal network. Acting as a green amphitheater, the visitor is both a spectator and a protagonist which is simultaneously embraced by its peaceful parlance and invited to actively question her/his role at the center of that symbolic arena.
Guests are welcomed to enter the micro-woodland and be surrounded by the levitating kokedamas: hundreds of seedlings proudly displaying their intimate relationship with soil supported by a 7.5 feet high three-dimensional metal structure. HED recently collaborated with vXchnge, a young data center colocation company seeking to establish industry leadership by providing innovative, customized, secure and reliable computer environments. A central part of our work was developing global branding guidelines to be implemented in all vXchnge facilities. At the time of our collaboration, vXchnge was in the midst of expanding their portfolio by establishing new locations within existing buildings in key cities. One such facility is the new Philadelphia Data Center. Coda Nightclub
Metcalfe provided design services for Coda- a Rittenhouse Square live performance venue, nightclub, and event space. The venue regularly showcases live performances and DJ sets from some of the newest, most talented artists in music, and hosts acts that span many genres — from indie rock to electronic, tribute acts, jam bands, pop, and more.
Coda features large unobstructed wall space, soaring ceilings, and a unique “Victorian meets Industrial” design scheme. The venue is modular and adaptable while measuring in over 12,000 square feet with multiple areas that can be divided into smaller, more intimate spaces.
