The August

The August is one of five social housing blocks in the new residential area Overhoeks in Amsterdam-Noord. The challenge was to create affordable houses, aesthetically competing with the surrounding luxury residential complexes. Coming home, feeling at home and soft surroundings were important design themes. Ossip van Duivenbode Caption Soft surroundingsThe August, like many other residential blocks in Overhoeks, has seven floors with a U-shaped floor plan. As a counterpart to the rigid urban structure, the building design is ‘softened’ with rounded corners, pastel colours and tangible finishings. The plinth facade is covered with luxurious green glazed brick from Royal Tichelaar, while the rest of the brick facade is... More

Las Palmas Retreat

Palm Springs is an enclave city in which homes serve as buffers between the public street and completely private rear courtyards. The street-facing walls of these homes are a critical component of privacy-making: the wall controls both physical access and visual privacy, but also mitigates the intense heat and light of the desert climate. The shade and thermal mass provided by the walls are vital to modulating temperature. This notion has led to many examples of beautiful breeze block walls that stand as visual icons of the domestic and civic architecture of the city. Las Palmas Retreat adapts the idea of the ubiquitous breeze block wall through careful modulation and reinterpretation. On the street side of the home, the shadow-block fa&cc... More

Desert House

At once an innovative, contemporary family home and a love letter to Palm Springs’ tradition of Modernism, Desert House is the home of Turkel Design cofounders Joel and Meelena Turkel. The classic post-and-beam wooden structure wraps around a courtyard and pool. The courtyard becomes part of the primary living space, allowing the home to live much larger than it is.    Chase Daniel Desert House exemplifies the embrace of the outdoors that inspires our design language. Clerestory windows frame views of the often snow-capped San Jacinto mountains in the distance, contrasting with the surrounding desert to capture an inimitable sense of place. The great room and three bedrooms each have direct, threshold-free access to the courtyar... More

The solution to the growing housing shortage

Startblock, the solution to the growing housing shortage in the Netherlands. Our vision is simple yet effective: high-quality prefab homes that are quickly and efficiently placed on-site. This concept is the result of a collaboration between three parties: Stijlvolhout B.V., OVT Development B.V., and 1op1 Architecture B.V. 1:1 Architectuur In 2018, we began developing Startblock 'Roots,' a compact 52m2 home, perfect for two-person households. Later, we introduced Startblock 'Tree' and 'Leaf,' which replace traditional single-family homes. Startblock continues to focus on innovation, improvement, and expansion of our prefab range, so we can deliver a wide variety of housing types to the market as a serious housing supplier. 1:1 Arch... Lake Muskoka Boathouse

The designer of the Lake Muskoka Boathouse grew up on the lake, spending childhood summers exploring its shoreline and taking part in the annual ritual of escape from the city to while away afternoons on the water.  These many seasons observing the materials and the rhythms of the area inspired the design of the building itself.   Photo by Révélateur Studio As a type, boathouses are essentially drying sheds, meant to protect watercraft and equipment from the elements, and facilitate their use another time: dry and ready to hand.  On Lake Muskoka the boathouse has also evolved over more than 100 years to represent leisure activities and a place to gather with family and friends at the water’s edge. 051_SUR Roof extention rue de Lausanne, Geneva

This roof extension project located on the outskirts of the city of Geneva provides for the addition of three floors to the existing building dating from the 1960s. The result is the construction of fifty new apartments with views over the lake. Olivier di Giambattista Olivier di Giambattista The project is based on an analysis of the existing structure, which revealed a high load reserve, making it possible to envisage a heavy, reinforced concrete roof extension. This large beam construction allows for the consolidation of the six existing buildings in terms of seismic risks by compressing their structure (as in pre-stressed structures) and by horizontally connecting them. Los Gatos, California Townhomes

This 11,054-square-foot development makes the most of an urban infill lot with four luxury townhomes above a 12-car parking garage. Each townhome was constructed as four modules, and the entire development was installed in just three days. Caption The project developer Jordan Castillo explains, “Building with Plant Prefab allowed us to significantly reduce disruption to the neighborhood. Luxury modular house "DUB"

We had a difficult task - to assemble a large luxury single-family house from the modules produced at the factory. But first, it is important to say what the word "Modular" means to us. This is a house consisting of volumetric modules, in which all the interior decoration, electrics, plumbing, and possibly even furniture are made at the factory. Such a house is assembled in the production, delivered by trucks and installed with a crane in one day on the lot. Another 1-2 weeks are required for the final exterior finish. We have already done projects from 16 to 110 square meters, but this is the first time we have designed such a large serial modular house. Sergey Nastavnik In the project, we combined the environmental friendliness of a... More

Silky black house

This silky shining dwelling is located in an rural expansion area. At first glance this rustic laid back house does not stand out among the surrounding houses. The burnt wood subtly refers to black barns in this area.  John van Groenedaal The origin of the black-burned facade cladding technique is in Japan, where it is called Shou Sugi Ban. They use this age-old technique to make wood maintenance-free and sustainable. Burning creates a layer of carbon on the wood so that the ingress of moisture and mold is prevented.  John van Groenedaal The chamfering of the charred house follows the border of the plot. It is also oriented to the position of the sun. The entire house forms an asymmetrical sculptural play of mass and o... More

Amagansett Addition

The client, a bachelor, found that his existing house, located on a bluff overlooking Amagansett Beach, did not provide enough space for entertaining his many friends and family for the summer. The existing pool deck provides stunning panoramic views of the ocean, so capitalizing on the view and creating an easy flow from inside to outside was critical in the design of this 5,000 square-foot modular guest house addition. Caption The client’s brief called for the existing house to remain, so a large auto court was created to accommodate guest entry. Additionally, a new sitebuilt garage is cantilevered off the bluff. A large hydraulically-operated glass garage door and floor-to-ceiling glazing opposite the garage door maintain vie... More

Cornwall Cabin

Overlooking a lush wooded valley below, the Cornwall Cabin rests on a steep sloping site in a rural corner of Northwestern Connecticut. As a weekend retreat for a Manhattan mother and her young daughter, the 1,500 square foot modern prefabricated cabin - located two hours outside the city - was carefully designed for simple, low-maintenance living. The compact floor plan efficiently accommodates the essentials for their weekend lifestyle. Custom built-ins for storage, benches, bookshelves, and bunk beds were incorporated throughout to maximize space and usability. Caption The cabin is sited to allow for uninterrupted views of the valley to the South. As such, the house is a linear composition oriented on an East/West axis, with expans... More
