In the Shuinan Sub-district of Songyang County, Zhejiang Province, Studio RE+N has transformed a long-derelict second-floor platform into an adaptable public space for a newly converted youth housing community. Collaborating as the digital-fabrication partner with Studio H2G, this coffee bar and lounge is located within Detroit Metro Airport’s McNamara Terminal. Inspired by the iconic Water Fountain installation at McNamara, this structure is composed of floating ribbons that illuminate with light and other multimedia devices. As a National Historic Landmark, Detroit’s Pewabic Pottery has been handcrafting pottery and architectural tiles for public and private buildings in the United States for over a century. In response to reaching the physical limits of working space, this addition has more than doubled Pewabic’s current production space. The addition establishes an open floor plan that allows for a flexible work layout and easy work flow for fabrication. The club amenities include a spa, Pilates studio, cycling studio, weight room, steam room, and juice bar. The new headquarters of the Medical Emergencies System (SEM) was designed by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos and AECOM and built by the Joint Venture Ferrovial Construcción – Climava. The building is the winning proposal of the public competition organized by CatSalut in 2022, which aimed to address the challenge of designing and constructing a 21,000 m² building in just 20 months, considering the inherent constraints this entails. Acting as a pedestrian center, the pedestrian bridge not only performs as a practical connector between regions, but also offers multiple programmatic interventions to encourage community connection and social engagement among city residents. The renovation of McMaster University’s Life Sciences Biology Building (LSBB) involved a multi-phased refurbishment of the original brutalist LSBB (first constructed in the 1970s), with the addition of a state-of-the-art, 11,400 SF Greenhouse with connecting labs, study spaces, and other amenities. This renovation has successfully integrated the new greenhouse with the pre-existing building, while simultaneously fulfilling additional objectives of the university, including operational efficiency, student experience, and sustainability, among others.
