Rooted Retrofit

In the heart of a quiet neighborhood, an old residential building stood forgotten. What invisible forces compel us to breathe new life into such spaces? In an era of relentless urban expansion, do we truly need architecture that questions demolition's ease, challenging the tangible costs of carbon footprints, ecosystem disruption, and fleeting trends? For preschools those delicate realms where tiny minds form their first impressions of the world the stakes feel even higher. How do we craft environments that spark joy without ignoring structural scars, tight budgets, or the whims of young perceptions across age groups? Footsteps Pre-school

Footsteps is a pre-school designed for the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Palmerston North. It sits on a large site in a commercial/retail area, backing on to a primary school. The building occupies half the site with carparking and garden areas to the north. The building has been pushed to the street edge to engage with passers by, different to the ‘big box’ retail outlets nearby sitting behind large carparks. Paul McCredie The project was built to a relatively tight budget and is based around a prefabricated Coresteel shed structure with a raised roof area at the street edge, which marks the buildings presence on the street. Coloured panels and vertical rhythms are used to accentuate this presence and guide visitors into... More

Preschool Lärkgatan in Bjuv

Project preschool Lärkgatan in south Swedish county of Bjuv aims for a building with strong connections to local brick building traditions.  The site is part of an old mill community, and the building will speak the language of local tradition. With brick as a characteristic building material for this region, it turned out to be the natural material of choice. We have also focused on highlighting the county´s  tile manufacturing heritage, expressed in the use of locally connected CC Höganäs tiles in the building´s bathrooms. The Lärkgatan preschool project meets the standards of Swedish environmental certification Miljöbyggnad Silver, calling for high performance solutions in ventilation and... More
