House in Colares

The project of the house in Colares stared with a topographical research in mind, finding the most dramatic cliff between Cascais and Cabo da Roca, for a weekend house, on the west coast of Portugal, at the closest point to the Americas on European land. The site is located in the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais, just between the famous Lighthouse of Cabo da Roca and the nearby Santuário da Peninha, it is part of a territory which is constellated by windmills and local production of wine. The plot itself has first been spotted on Google Maps and has been further investigated for planning permissions to the local authorities, it is located at the very end of the Rua das Piroletas in the one and the only land left unbuilt since the... Casa Grijalva

This project is planned for a growing family. The design responds to the clients’ necessity of open spaces and visuals that interact with each other. With that idea, we planned an inner patio at ground level that serves as a connector between social and private areas, as well as an inner water mirror that is connected with the backyard pool, creating a linking space between the outdoors and the indoors. Also, we proposed a double-height in the kitchen/dining room area to maximize the amplitude sensation in it, as well as to connect the space with the corridor in the first level. Reaching the second level, an inner patio visual welcome us, which allow us to generate natural ventilation as well as a relaxing space. The spaces’ de... More

Hawks Nest

The client was drawn to the site, the top of a bluff of an abandoned limestone quarry in West Virginia with sweeping views of the Potomac River. The house and artist studio is perched at the edge of the 100’ cliff to take full advantage of the magnificent view. In response to the client’s request that the house be “of the place”, cast concrete walls were anchored to the bedrock with caissons that extend down into fissures in the rock. The two concrete masses support Vierendeel steel trusses above that allow the living and studio space to utilize floor to ceiling windows that blur the line between inside and outside. The narrow plan affords natural cross ventilation and the elevated structure takes advantages of the b... More

Lake Huron House

This summer house is set on the banks of Lake Huron in a small, remote Canadian town about an hour’s drive from London, Ontario. While the architectural context might be characterised as somewhat conservative “cabin country”, this house attempts to extend the possibilities of the traditional lakeside family retreat through a contemporary architectural approach, harnessing recent developments in design, technology and sustainability to connect meaningfully with its beautiful natural setting while exploringnew ways of enhancing the lifestyle experience of the family summer getaway.   While theaesthetic approach that Cape Town-based architecture firm SAOTA took might seem like a radical departure from the traditional r... Farm Guesthouse in Izery Mountains

Guesthouse project in Izery Mountains involves conversion and expansion of existing farm houses in order to create group of buildings serving as a private house with several rooms for rent, garden pavilion, alpaca farming and service building with garage, creating multifunctional habitat for owners and guests. It was important to keep the character and form of local homesteads in urban scale with use of traditional materials and motives but with contemporary expression at the same time. Designed composition respects location of original buildings as well as shape and arrangement of their gable roofs. Due to new functional disposition of buildings their sizes had to be modified. However in order to keep the scale of current forms the ma... More

villa AM

The first step in this project was to rearrange the interior space distribution of the original layout. The pre-existing structure, in fact, despite having valuable connotations, was not fully functional to the needs of the clients.   A complex restoration work made it possible to redefine the central staircase, which now is the fulcrum of the project, designed to be the link between all the rooms of the house, where different materials merge: stone, glass, wood boiserie and corten steel. A mix that gives life and a space that connects the basement floor to the attic floor, leading to a large garden roof.   Despite the relevance of the restoration intervention, the sensitivity with which the new elements have been associated in the pre-exis... Casa TRBC was designed as a continuous interior: a single space broken up only by functional rhythm, in which living area and sleeping area merge into each other with no obstacles to overcome. The most distinctive visual element in the project is the custom wood paneling that covers the reinforced concrete walls and highlights the continuity of the space. Added to the wall that divides the central part of the house, it transforms its limitations into opportunities: isolating the sleeping area with a large sliding door and hiding the kitchen, it amps up the living area’s flexibility. The bathroom is separated into stations, and in its new “exploded” layout the shower stall – brought closest to the sleeping area &ndas... More

Inserted in a rural context next to a running water brook, the house has as an ordering and generating project element the preexisting stone wall confining with the public street. The idea is to extend this wall and integrate it into the design of the house. The material is changed from stone to cork, differentiating the intervention of the pre-existence.  Assuming the wall as an opaque element simultaneously interior and exterior that ensures privacy in relation to the road, the house closes to the north and becomes transparent in the south opposite side to the “private” part of the terrain.  Here, the house lies on a platform that rests above the ground. This separation act contrasts with the creation of patios and the use of ge... More

Skrivestue Faldbakken

The large plot is high and beautiful over the meadow landscape and the property consists of several built houses from various eras. A new extension could link the various existing buildings together, while the great view would be drawn into a new conservatory, a family room, or a writing room for the author. The extension is planned as a small timber building designed for maximum views and high light emission. It "escapes the roof" in the adjacent buildings by adjacent recessed niches. The roof lift follows the existing roof angles and flat roof solution into existing intermediate buildings. The new building is a hot, frost-proof solid building where the main support is in laminated timber columns and girders, while the roof structure is in... Life cycle dwellings Achtmaal

Achtmaal is a small regional centre in Noord-Brabant with approximately 1600 inhabitants. The municipality of Zundert, to which Achtmaal belongs, wanted to ensure that the centre remains attractive and liveable for both young and old in the future. In this way, good facilities play an important role, which explains why Achtmaal – which currently has a church, supermarket and cafe – commissioned a multipurpose community complex and five life cycle dwellings. A restricted multiple-stage tender was initiated for this purpose, which was won by atelier PRO.Scale and connection with the surroundingsThe buildings are characterised by a small scale with a height of one or two storeys with a pitched roof. Almost all the dwellings are semi-detached w... More

PH House

Norm Architects have restored and rebuilt a historic villa in Copenhagen after a devastating fire. The story goes that the house used to be inhabited by the renowned Danish architect, designer and cultural critic, Poul Henningsen.   The villa, located in Copenhagen, is said to have been the home of the famous, danish design-icon, Poul Henningsen. Today, a family of three resides in the historic house – a modern home that holds references to its original state – with beautiful high panels, parquet flooring, low, paned windows, teak furniture and – of course – retro PH lamps hanging over the kitchen island.   “The house being a former home – or summerhouse – of Poul Henningsen wasn&rsquo... Villa in Dzoraghbyur

Laconic appearance of the building is a reflection of the rational functional solution of internal space. Excellent finishing and building materials (stone, wood, metal) play an important role in facade composition. In the newest interpretation, they create an ascetic and modern image of individual housing. More

The Yousefian Residence

This summer house serves as a yearly retreat for a family that lives internationally. The symbolic center of the Armenian home has always been the traditional stone oven, which was the main principle of the design concept for this home. Inspiration was drawn from traditional vernacular Armenian architecture, in which a tonir, a fire pit used for baking bread, is positioned in the center of the home with a hazarashen, an opening in the roof to admit sunlight and release smoke, placed directly above.
