VILNA School - a project to restore the educational institution "Kharkiv Gymnasium No. 47" in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Kharkiv Gymnasium No. 47 was hit by a missile from the Russian occupying forces on July 4, 2022. The architectural bureau IK-architects has developed a project for the rebuilding of the educational institution VILNA School (Vilna means Free from Ukrainian language)  , which can become one of the symbols of the rethinking of the education system and approaches to the design of educational institutions. Originally planned as a fire protection renovation, we developed a comprehensive design concept for the building extension from the 1980s, based on the existing structure of the Musterschule founded in 1803 in Frankfurt's Nordend. Thanks to a thorough examination of the available resources on-site, the result went beyond what was originally planned, using only a few and minimally invasive measures. One main component of the extensive renovation was the focus on developing a wayfinding system in the form of a new color concept. The layout of the Roman domus offers the clear suggestion of a spatial idea that establishes a precise hierarchy between the rooms and guarantees high, and if necessary differentiated, levels of usability and accessibility. Moving away from the historic center, this system is connected to the aggregate of farms immersed in nature. They should be designed well beyond the idea of just learning spaces, but also as community centres, alive and open all day. Together with the Waunakee Community School District (WCSD) and community input, EUA developed a plan to address a growing community and the need for flexibility for future expansion by creating financially responsible solutions supported by public outreach. In cooperation with KDV Architecture we have placed contract wallcoverings in public school Villa Vlinderhof. 120m2 of Digital Wallcovering in the stairwell and 7000m2 of white Suwide Scala (5850) and brown Suwide Capriccio (5493) wallcoverings in the rest of the building. For the Digital Wallcovering they choosed a photo from above Sprang Capelle, to bring the surrounding nature into the school. The project was completed in 2013. More
