The architectural firm, Hello Wood – known for its unique cabin houses and builder festivals - has again designed a spectacular public installation. Placed in the centre of the Factory'ard in Veszprém, the Garden of Communities is an artwork that celebrates the rich culture of the Veszprém-Balaton region. The pavilion is a symbolic monument to the cooperation of the 116 municipalities participating in the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture programme. The intrigue of the large volume of interior space in these existing New Orleans Shotgun dwellings directed the concept of converting this space and flow into a more efficient and modern design. Challenges to this project included specific restrictions due to its unusual property boundary as well as budget limitations. However, this afforded me the full autonomy of the project design and execution. Limited budgets and resources of an island location, coupled with strict design criteria, drove the design process and product choices. These included "deconstruction" of the '70’s-era house while retaining the original foot print, SIP construction, automated LED lighting controls with a centralized driver panel (100% LED), remote energy monitoring, HRV & heat pump technologies, rainwater harvesting (RWH) for domestic use, and incorporating reclaimed wood and metal elements. The Duke Golf Course has a thoroughbred heritage from providing an army camp to the Romans, a hunting venue in the middle ages, for the Dukes of Brabant, and now a prestigious but welcoming golf and business venue. The owners of ‘The Duke’ wanted to recreate and compliment the historical appeal, whilst eager to deliver a fresh and new interior, chose reclaimed timber from Dennebos. We were asked to supply a wooden floor representing the unique quality experienced by customers of Weber Grill. They immediately fell in love with the look and warmth of tone and grain achieved by this character flooring. Another big advantage was the fact, that this ‘new floor’ was created from old reused timbers. Recycled timber making a very eco- friendly choice, not impacting on our natural resources, but taking timber from its former glory and giving it a second life!
