OFFICES TIENSEVEST Leuven

In collaboration with ARCHI+I. Station neighborhoods are prominent meeting places and urban anchors within a city. They are potential impulses which can activate cities towards a stronger metropolis. There where the heartbeats of arriving and departing, sojourning and saying farewell, the skyline is the silhouette of a station’s neighbourhood, a fact that stays in your memory as a traveller. As a connecting link between the station and the County Hall five natural stone spaces will be placed along the track. This range of office blocks stands like colour-dots on atop a glass access plinth in dialogue with the passers-by and forms an architectural connection with the County Hall. The thematics of various window openings and eves breach the... More

‘De Hofdame’ housing complex

“ We wished to introduce more diversity into the apartments, and to create larger outdoor spaces” Klunder Architecten wished to shrink the enormous bulk of De Hofdame housing complex. This meant that no superfluous struts or rails were to be visible in the glazing of the balconies and terraces; the design stipulated sliding doors over the full height of the storey, and across the full width of the apartment. It transpired that Reynaers Aluminium’s CP 96 sliding-door system offered the perfect solution for this requirement. Rotterdam has major plans for the coming decades. In March 2007, the City’s Municipal Executive presented its Stadsvisie 2030 (City Vision, 2030) which states that Rotterdam intends to keep up with the competition f... More

Arkady WrocŁaw skie arcade

The Arkady Wrocławskie arcade, opened on 28 April 2007, is one of Wrocław’s largest commercial investments in recent years. The city of Wrocław, in southwestern Poland, was founded 650 years ago, and is currently in a phase of dynamic development. The building is in a highly attractive location – close to the centre, at the beginning of the Świdnicka street, the city’s main axis. The building is not located in simple surroundings, and this is certainly not going to change: the Arkady constitutes, unintentionally, the first phase of the gigantic investments to be made in this city district by Polish and foreign companies – a district that will ultimately evolve into Wrocław’s major business, trading, leisure and residential area. The authori... More

Sainsbury's Supermarket

Some call this string of towns just outside London the ‘Silicone Corridor’; Reading, Slough and Maidenhead, nestled along the M4 motorway, produce a fair share of the country’s computer software. They aren’t known for their beauty, but for the business which makes the southeast of England much more prosperous than the rest of the country. Mostly boxy-looking business parks and office blocks line the streets in and out of these towns which have recently become internationally famous, maybe even infamous, through a comedy series, ‘The Office’ satirising the drab life of white collar workers in the ‘Silicone Corridor’ and its business sheds. Until recently the northern town centre of Maidenhead satisfied the cliché of the uninspired and unr... More

Historial de la Vendée Museum

The new Historial de la Vendée museum, located in the vicinity of the village of Les Lucs-sur-Boulogne and nestling in the undulating landscape, offers an impression of the region’s eventful history from prehistoric times to the 21st century. The museum’s architecture is determined by its location – whilst the building also adds that something extra to the landscape. The client’s apparently paradoxical wish was to create an appealing cultural building that would also fit in well with the landscape without being highly conspicuous. PLAN01’s architects complied with this wish by designing a museum hidden under a roof comprised of planes sown with grass. They refer to an inconspicuous building, to the ambiguity between a discreet and expres... More

Bloemhof

After a period in which buildings in the Netherlands were primarily constructed in outlying areas outside cities, in the last few years the focus has shifted to construction in urban areas. 39% of the proposed construction at urban locations that was built in the decade between 1995 and 2005 (in this decade a very large number of VINE X neighbourhoods, named after the policy briefing released in 1988 by the Dutch ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment), were built on the edges of cities. These days almost all the construction activity consists of ‘condensing’. The goal is to preserve the green suburban areas and encourage the middle class to live in the city. ‘The intense city,’ a residential-building manifestation wi... More

Housing Complex Bervoets

The new residential district of Bervoets, built in a sylvan environment outside Brussels, is a model of sustainable town planning. This is due first of all to the district’s attractive, timeless layout: the 239 residences and ten ateliers are spread over nine buildings and look out on three internal tree-planted squares, generous and inviting public spaces where residents can encounter one another. There are no cars on the street – they are all in one of three underground car parks. Sustainability and progressiveness also characterise the technologies which have been used in building the district. Electricity and warmth for heating and hot water are produced by means of cogeneration, resulting in significant energy savings. The residences h... More

Fiteco Office Building

Increasingly, city centres as well as suburban areas are seeing the construction of compact buildings housing multiple functions, motivated by considerations of sustainability. This makes it possible to improve the internal organisation, reduce construction costs and the environmental footprint. The building in the commune of Changé (4 km from Laval), designed by Colboc Franzen & Associés architects for the accounting group Fiteco and housing both the Fiteco headquarters and a local branch office, is a good example of this strategy. Initially, the idea was to build two distinct buildings on this site. However, city regulations allowed only for two small buildings with a big car park. So the architects convinced the client to build one big b... More

University of Lucerne’s Main Building

Starting with the Lucerne Central Station, which was built in 1985 by the architectural bureau Ammann und Baumann and its employee at that time Santiago Calatrava, the city of Lucerne began a radical modernisation of the quarter stretching eastwards from the station to Lake Lucerne. The Culture and Congress Centre designed by Jean Nouvel, with its wide overhanging roof, has stood at the lakeside since 2000, and directly next to it, the University’s new main building has recently been completed. Instead of a new building, it is a renovation of the former post office, around which an unusual three-dimensional façade has been placed. The white shell appears to have been intricately folded from the second floor upwards around the five-storey bu... More
