Rooflights

This narrow 18th century house in the south west of the Netherlands had been in decay since the 70’s when it lost its historical exterior and had lain empty for several years. Essentially reduced to just a 3- meter wide shell by the time the owner purchased it, the property, like similar houses in the area, presented a number of challenges to overcome before it could become a modern and workable home – long dark corridors, poor privacy caused by the ground floor windows facing the street, and critically a lamentable lack of daylight throughout the house. An old military barrack in Ede (the Netherlands) has been transformed into apartments and a daycare center. The decision was made to keep the original looks of the buildings exterior. The interior however has been refreshed and adapted for living. Lots of natural light and protection from overheating contribute to comfort of the inhabitants' lifes.  The new living spaces have been modernized and adapted for everyday use. Roof windows combinations beyond the openwork staircases let a lot of natural light into the homes. Our clients found the original Edwardian layout of their new home in Barnes, South West London with it’s dark interiors and cellular, disconnected spaces hard to reconcile with their desire for light filled, free flowing spaces with a bold design and connection to the garden.For phase one, we tapered the interior walls away from the entrance to frame and expand views towards and through the garden as you move into the house, towards the greenery. An internal glazed and plant filled courtyard fosters a blurring of boundaries between the inside and outside at Mrs Custard's House in Brixton, London. Black brick wraps ribbon-like from the master bedroom through the kitchen and dining room and settles to form a second sunken courtyard. We created a generous and light-filled sequence of spaces which work both for our clients and for Mrs Custard, their cat. In fact, Mrs Custard is the proud owner of a cat flap which takes her through a cupboard, up some steps, through the wall and onto the bench outside. She couldn’t be happier. More

Thanks to its completely prefabricated white concrete facade with undulating balconies, Lofts by the Amstel is undoubtedly an eye-catcher by the waterside in Amstelkwartier, Amsterdam. Each of the building’s six private owners designed their ideal apartment, which occupies one entire floor. This collective of owners and the team –Studioninedots/OntwerpJeWoning/VinkBouw– are incredibly proud of the result. Amstelkwartier is a new mixed-use residential/commercial district in Amsterdam Oost. This 12-hectare site is currently being developed with 1,100 dwellings and 30,000 m2 commercial space. Combining Georgian heritage with contemporary design Tasou Associates have created a luxurious, modern project by placing a true emphasis upon attention-to-detail, space and light quality. Glazing Vision’s three-wall box rooflights were specified to allow direct access from the stairwell to the breath-taking outdoor space, whilst filling the stairwell below with natural daylight. We were given the kind of brief most young aspiring practices dream of: to design a contemporary house in a wonderful location overlooking the sea. The twist here was that the house had to be highly accessible whilst avoiding the ‘institutionalised’ feel that many homes for people with impaired mobility occasionally suffer from. The site presented us with a few challenges. First of all, it was set between 2 traditional, low lying thatched cottages identified as being of architectural significance. Secondly, the views out to sea were only achievable at first floor level, and thirdly, the front, less-private side to the plot faced south meaning there would be a conflict between the road and the proposed garden that would front onto it.... The top floor kitchen of the Glass house features a Glazing Vision opening rooflight on a flat roof to ensure maximum daylight and ventilation, whilst adding to the minimalist nature of the building design. The site on Swains Lane is situated on the very edge of a historic Victorian cemetery. Originally occupied by an existing steel-framed house designed by the modernist John Winter, alongside a small cluster of other contemporary residences, the existing building was replaced with a modern 4 storey solution.
