Located in Mangmi Village in Yangpyeong, South Korea, the project is situated in the valley where three mountains meet. The site sitting in the deep mountains retains a calm, peaceful vibrance. After retirement, the client couple have been living there growing fruit trees. They asked for a community facility and a glasshouse along with a campsite. The most important feature in the site is the forest. Renovation of an old rural complex for residential and agricultural purposes.   We decided to emphasize architectural differences within the principal building and the other recovered structures (house, barn, stable, pigsty, cote, warehouse, garage, cistern, and lobby) as well as to underline the main building's supporting structure made of raw earth walls. As a consequence, the main building's facades have been redefined through the use of dark plaster on the existing openings and by cleaning and preserving the recoverable fields. Locanda La Raia comes alive in an old abandoned building which was once an old tavern, typical of the local tradition. The reconstruction started from research of the meaning of the place and its relations with the landscape: from enhancing the dialogue between interior and exterior. The proportions of the building have been redefined through fills and soil movements to recover an identity more pronounced  and recognizable; new openings, different for shapes and dimensions, have selected the most interesting views, and the the same typology matrix was reversed by transforming the inner court on an abstract patio around it to which the new organization of internal spaces revolves. The site presented a number of challenges, including a house over 150 years old, the proximity to a Special Area of ​​Conservation (River Nore) and the existing topography. Although not protected through statutory designation the original house with its modest scale and unassuming architectural aspirations makes a contribution to our quality of life by informing us of our past and adding visual interest to the environment.
