Voyager Craft Coffee St John
San Francisco-based Studio BANAA has completed Voyager Craft Coffee’s newest location in Downtown San José: Voyager St. John. Occupying the former Scott’s Seafood space, this compact café layers bold color, custom millwork, and graphic murals into what the designers describe as “a condensed maximalist environment.”
Referencing both 1980s Italian Memphis Design and the surreal energy of Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Studio BANAA approached the 1,000-square-foot space as a full-volume composition - treating walls, floors, ceilings, and fixtures as a single, interconnected canvas.

CRB - Emeryville Offices
The project consisted of a ±15,710 sq. ft. full-floor renovation within an existing high-rise building in Emeryville for an engineering, architecture, construction, and consulting firm. BAA collaborated closely with the Client throughout the design process to create a workspace that reflects their design philosophy and company culture. While the existing space offered expansive views of the Bay, San Francisco, and the Berkeley Hills beyond, it was previously subdivided into multiple tenant spaces— not meeting the tenant’s needs.

Mediterranean By The Bay
The original 2100sf three-story two-unit house in Sausalito, CA was a vaguely Mediterranean style with later add-ons for a garage and office. Years of deferred maintenance also required extensive framing repairs, foundation upgrades and new windows. With the potential for spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay, the interior was boxy and ill adapted to the client’s lifestyle.
While remodeling took place throughout the house, four major design moves define this project.

First, walls and a nonfunctioning fireplace at the main level were removed to transform the plan into a single living/dining/kitchen area that is better suited to casual dining and entertainment. Second, the garage and... More

AIASF HQ and Center for Architecture+Design
The Center for Architecture + Design and AIA San Francisco Headquarters creates a dialogue between the newly-exposed cathedral-like concrete structure of the historic Building and finely crafted insertions, ultimately creating a Center that raises public awareness of all aspects of design.

Designed to advance a public dialogue about art, architecture, design, and the built environment, the new AIA San Francisco and the Center for Architecture + Design headquarters are catalyzing the reoccupation of San Francisco’s urban core. In moving to the storefront of the landmark Hallidie Building, both non-profits sought to extend their reach beyond the architectural community. The client-architect tea... More

Glen Park Residence
This view home was carefully created for a San Francisco entrepreneur. This is his first residence and he worked avidly with the design team while also becoming cultivated in architecture and design. The design team consisted of CCS Architecture, headed by Cass Calder Smith and the owner’s creative director, Akemi Tamaribuchi, from Subject to Change, who brought CCS onto the project. The collaboration resulted in an overall creative alliance where CCS handled the architecture and finishes, while Subject to Change handled the furniture, art, styling, and was the conduit to the owner. The house was created for everyday living, intimate meetings, and occasional entertaining. It’s meant to be a ‘place’ to share ideas with others and... More
