Berendo Middle School New Gymnasium

Opened in 1910 in Los Angeles, Berendo is the oldest California middle school continuously operating on the same site.  The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) selected CO Architects to design the new free-standing gymnasium and renovate an existing administrative space into a mental health clinic.  The new gym, playfield, and plaza sustainably extend Berendo’s service to its more than 800 students and the neighboring communities of Pico-Union, MacArthur Park, and Koreatown.  The school has nearly 100 percent minority enrollment, the majority of students being Hispanic and economically disadvantaged. Nils Timm The design brief called for an approach that celebrated and facilitated the connection between Be... More

Bretenoux Middle School

The middle school on the outskirts of Bretenoux is situated off-street and its broad western front shapes a public square. The compact organisation of the single-story building is reminiscent of the regions medieval bastides. The surrounding cantilevered canopy made of dark carbonised wood protects the building from overheating by excessive solar radiation. This restrained, closed design contrasts with the generous, communicative interiors in which light-colored wood dominates. Dietrich Untertrifaller with phBa - architectes urbanistes The rooms are clearly arranged around a central access zone delimiting the individual functional areas for teaching, school life and general services. Public facilities such as the library, the restaura... More

Lycée Evariste Galois

Demolish or renovate? This question often arises when it comes to the further development of school buildings from the 1970s. The senior high school Lycée Evariste Galois in the Paris metropolitan area no longer meets current requirements and is bursting at the seams due to strong demographic development. With a holistic environmental approach in mind, we decided together with our partner Panorama Architecture from Aix en Provence to restructure and expand. Based on the qualities of the existing, we reorganised the individual parts of the building and united them into a legible, communicative whole. Dietrich Untertrifaller The newly created green schoolyard forms the heart of the ensemble and connects the various functions. It... More

Ecole du Pont-Rouge

First prize in a competition, the "Au fil des Saisons" project proposes to set up the school in a learning park combining nature and culture in a close and innovative environment. CCHE Situated between two contrasting contexts, the urban and the landscape, the mineral and the vegetal, the new school is proposed as an entity set in a park that is one with that of the Town Hall. This major public space thus becomes the heart and lung of a very dense neighborhood and connects it to the other sectors of the City of Lancy. The original topographical link is finely restored to the territory thanks to a gently sloping meadow linking the Town Hall to the new school. The strong idea of the proposal is to transform the park into a school. The e... More

Sassa School Complex

Ten years after a destructive earthquake rocked Italy's central Abruzzo region, many students still attend class in temporary modules similar to containers. Named winners of an international competition, SET Architects’ design for the new “Sassa School Complex” proposes reconstructing a place for students and the community to learn, gather, and grow. Inspired by the modularity and essential nature of climbing frame play structures, the architects describe the design as a metaphor for “freedom and social aggregation as a fundamental value for dynamic and innovative teaching.” Located in the town of Sassa, near L’Aquila (the town most affected by the 2009 earthquake), the project is situated strategically... Thorpe Lodge

This project for Holland Park School has given us an opportunity to explore in more detail how we work with historic buildings to make them fit for contemporary use. Grade II-listed Thorpe Lodge has a captivating history, and was originally a Palladian-style villa surrounded by countryside. Its distinguished residents include the Victorian portrait artist Henry Tanworth Wells and Montagu Norman, Governor of the Bank of England, both of whom remodelled the villa with the loss of much of the original character.   Our sensitive restoration has returned some of this character to the building, reworking it as an asset to the school. The jumbled sequence of internal spaces are now knitted back together, reconnecting the building to the str... More

Immaginazione e Lavoro School

In 2018, the professional training agency “Immaginazione e Lavoro” converted the school Istituto Sant’Anna in Moncalieri, on the outskirts of the city of Turin, into a professional training centre for graphic designers and electronic technicians. This abandoned school building needed urgent repair. To juggle budget constraints, the project decided to focus on preserving the parts which were still structurally sound, thus reducing construction work to a minimum and relying instead on décor, graphics and communication. With a series of cosmetic repairs, this project intends to restore the dignity and identity of the building, focusing on communicating and presenting ideas with graphics and colour. In this instance,... More
