Green School
The idea behind the project was to transform a former Soviet Union office building into a modern, environmentally friendly educational space for the Green School.
This project reimagines what was once a stark and imposing brutalist structure, turning it into a vibrant environment that fosters learning, creativity, and connection with nature. While the original building’s heavy geometry presented a challenge, our vision was clear — to retain its recognizable form while reinterpreting it through the principles of contemporary and sustainable design.

It was on this very spot and at this juncture that a shift in paradigms took place: away from the conventional manner of construction in a commercial zone reaching out to future urbanization. Between 2002 and 2009, all the typical designs were rejected. For the very first time, Vienna was demanding that wastelands of parking lots lining the streets in commercial zones had to go. Neue Schule
The existing late-classical ensemble comprising the main building and a carriage house is situated on Stapferstrasse on a hilltop in Zurich’s Oberstrass quarter. Now preservation-listed, the structure was built in 1855 as an apartment building. The underground vaults correspond to the orientation of a previous house with a winepress that dates back to the 17th century. Since 1943, the main building and carriage house have been used as a school by the Neue Schule Zürich. Additional classrooms and group rooms required to meet contemporary teaching needs were built in the basement around the historical building.
