This project is a liquor retail store, a joint venture between the Japanese brand Suntory and the Chinese brand Jieqiang, located on the first floor of the historic "Deyi Building." The design blends vintage, Shanghainese, and Japanese styles, honoring the architectural heritage while preserving its unique features. By incorporating iconic elements from the Japanese Suntory Brewery, our design embodies the spirit of cultural exchange between China and Japan. The new store concept helps shift the focus from footwear to apparel – evoking the street with a minimal, industrial ethos and placing merchandise at the focus of customer experience. The project began with a client’s request to create a space for Japanese brand LeTAO that would tie seamlessly with the local neighbourhood and meet the brand’s reputation for excellence. Scott Norsworthy Explorations of the manufacturing process that creates LeTAO’s signature cheesecakes and cookies were an influence in the design process. They are baked in moulds with paper lining and the richness and texture of wrinkled paper is a recognizable trait. They resonated with the processes used to build the neighbourhood.
