VVE460 demonstrates how adaptive reuse can extend the life of an existing interior through careful conversion rather than replacement. The project by Galati Casmiro Giorno reinterprets an early twentieth-century Liberty-style apartment in Catania as a hospitality space, using targeted interventions to improve functionality, spatial clarity, and guest comfort while maintaining a connection to the interior’s architectural heritage. Rather than erasing traces of the past, the design treats existing materials and cultural references as active components of the renewed guest accommodation.

Casa Bendico blends international design principles with local Sicilian craftsmanship
Designed by Gaëtan Le Penhuel Architectes, Casa Bendico is a residential project located in the picturesque town of Noto, Sicily. Emphasizing a refined simplicity and environmental sensitivity, the house reflects a blend of international design principles and local craftsmanship. Additionally, the project was executed by multiple local contractors from Syracuse, Modica, and Catania, ensuring the project aligns with the regional construction techniques and aesthetic sensibilities.

This project started with the intention to harmonise the existing volumes in a contemporary key, with particular focus on the enhancement of the external areas. A prior study of the orientation and the solar path and a geometric analysis of the existing structure allowed the maximum employment of the daylight and its dark shades.From an architectonic point of view, the existing volumes, resulting from a “spontaneous” growth of the construction system, have been brought back to a unitary vision through a simple morphological scheme, which is able to re-establish a dynamic balance between simple and readable shapes.
