Grow STEM Center

Schools in Bulgaria keep the imprint of the past socialist period. A long corridor with rooms attached to it, identical desks and chairs facing the podium, where the teacher, the source of knowledge, stands. An educational model, fit for the 21st century, is hard to thrive in this environment. Because of that, 90. SU “José de san Martín” school in Sofia approached Lusio architects to redesign part of their existing building into a new STEM space called "Grow". The process was long and involved extensive research - on-site observation of school life, interviews and focus groups with the teachers and students. In a series of workshops, the architects discovered several challenges for the space - such as the need for... More

Wayne State University STEM Innovation Center

Designed by NORR and Fishbeck, the new STEM Innovation Center at Wayne State University transforms what was a dated, seven-storey library into a state of the art, 116,467 sq. ft interdisciplinary teaching and learning hub. The building pushes the boundaries of what classrooms, laboratories, and collaboration spaces look like and function—aiding the university’s public research focus, while preparing students for successful careers in STEM industries. Justin Maconochie Photography As learning spaces evolve from eyes-front classrooms into multifunctional workspaces, their lighting approach must support the various activities these environments demand. Flexibility, comfort, and performance are critical for productivity and we... More

Michigan-Flint Murchie Science Building

In the last decade the number of UM-Flint students majoring in STEM disciplines increased by 58%—all housed in a single facility, the Murchie Science Building (MSB). To accommodate continued enrollment growth in STEM, MSB is expanding, with an addition that adds 70,000 sf of new, active and team-based learning spaces. Tom Harris UM-Flint turned to HED to design an addition to extend and enhance the existing MSB. The new structure would not only need to create new classrooms and laboratories, but also meet the unique needs of UM-Flint’s nontraditional student population, providing majority-commuter students with a strong connection to the campus and cultivating a sense of community. In response, the proposed design seeks to... More

Innovative school labs

When we first got invited to design an innovative STEM center in Shumen, Bulgaria, we were pleased to work with a young team of teachers and professionals, who helped us set the program. Happily, their views and needs matched with our approach and together we were able to establish a design proposal with which we applied for state funding and subsequently the school won the finances needed for the realization. Teachers wanted to have the proper facilities to prepare children for the professions of the future, like environmentalist, computer specialist, robotics engineer and others in the STEM field. To answer their requirements, we proposed that each of the laboratories of the refurbished center has its distinctive feature in a specifi... More
