Stools

The stool was among the first types of furniture. Simple, with three legs and a flat top, it served the most basic need: to sit. In this week’s theme article, we take a look at stools, which have evolved to incorporate various forms for different living and entertainment arrangements. Designers today use three, four or five legs, producing stools at heights that match tabletops or higher surfaces like bars and counters. These are the stacking stools of the Splice range. Shorter than the bar stools, they stack neatly on top of each other and make practical but funky cafe furniture or breakout area furniture. Inspired by the maritime surroundings of our original studio/workshop at Shoreham Port this original designer furniture uses similar angular shapes to those seen in such things as dockside machinery and sea-defences. The strong forms of the stools are picked out by rubbing back the paint on the edges before finishing in a clear lacquer. Clients can choose a bespoke colour to suit their commercial interior design. The Splice Bar Stool is the taller of the two Splice Stools and also make great cafe seating. These unusual bar stools would also fit within any contemporary interior where counter stools with an ‘edge’ are called for, as the painted stools have had their edges rubbed back to expose the Birch ply beneath. Our British craftsmen use this technique to pick out the bold shapes that form the stools which are reminiscent of the dockside equipment our designers could see from the windows of our original studio/workshop at Shoreham Port. Fabrizio Gallinaro reinterpreted the classic Windsor chair, adapting it to the contemporary spirit of Billiani. So was born W., which, right from the choice of name, declares the process of reduction and subtraction of which it is the result. Originating in England in the late eighteenth century and subsequently popular in America, the Windsor is one of the most prolific types of chair in the history of design.
