Topaz Student Apartments
Pierce Education Properties brought ID Studios in to collaborate with AVRP Studios on Topaz Apartments, a new, seven-story ground-up off-campus student housing building just steps from SDSU. Angular, blue graphics fill the two-story, glass-lined lobby and globe lights give the illusion of stars in the night sky. Throughout the rest of the common areas, you’ll find an energetic modern design aesthetic and an open floor plan with furniture groupings to provide maximum flexibility

Base 11
The dormitory Base 11 opposite the gasometers is part of the master plan “Mehrwert Simmering”. This urban development model results in the trapezoidal ground plan, which is based on the subway station and the dominant gasometers. 306 apartments in a rough, factory-like building, minimalist rooms and spacious common areas were built on a tight budget. The reduced equipment is compensated with exciting spatial sequences and staged light guides. Narrow corridors open up to communicative places, low corridors open to the 21-meter high glazed foyer.

Blue Roof
The “attico” story in the historically roofed-over Baroque building at the heart of the inner city, adjacent to David Chipperfield’s Kaufhaus Tyrol. It turned out to be possible to break up the “wrong” roof of 1983 and re-set a smooth, steep roof as a new crown. In order to visibly demonstrate respect for the historic facade, apertures were restrained and kept functional: a huge roof window transforms the interior to a rooftop terrace in summertime. The haptic texture of the room itself is inspired by the rawness of old roofing materials, as spotlighted by the trapezoidal metal-sheet apertures in industrial buildings.

St Hildas
St Hilda’s was founded in 1893 and the College site has evolved into an informal sequence of buildings set within beautiful gardens on the banks of the River Cherwell. Gort Scott – appointed following an international design competition in 2016 – introduced spatial coherence and a greater sense of place elevating the landscaped setting and the verdant edge of the River Cherwell.

The previous entrance sequence was underwhelming and confusing, with a distinct ‘back of house’ feel and a large swathe of tarmac that detracted from the potential of the College’s picturesque setting. Maya & Olmeca Residence Halls
The twin sister buildings, Maya and Olmeca Residence Halls at San Diego State University, are two of many legacy ‘red-brick’ 3-story buildings that were built throughout the CSU system. HED’s design team was challenged to restore and refresh the student spaces while maintaining much of the fundamental architecture, emphasizing the unique original features of the building.
Creating openness and flow through the buildings with lots of collaborative areas designed for studying, playing, eating, and hanging out became the main goal of the project.
