Abington Friends School, Headwaters Discovery Program
After the completion of Abington Friends School’s (AFS) Garden Station (for early childhood students), we worked with the school once again to design and build AFS Outside: an abstract play structure, water feature, and associated landscape forms. Here, older students can crawl, swing, run, and climb during their breaks from classroom learning. This area has become a central part of AFS’ curriculum; the structure challenges young students to take physical risks on their own terms and integrate the adjacent natural forms into their everyday play. The Cool-là swing by Studio Chiaramonte-Marin is an unusual piece of furniture that escapes precise cataloging; an element with a strong visual and aesthetic impact, which evokes the concept of a nest. The pre-galvanized steel tubular structure supports a tubular and expanded metal seat. The parasol is made of three-dimensional fabric, the same fabric used for the seat cushion cover. Thanks to the use of Dynema ropes, the rocking of the seat is guaranteed to last a long time.

IVY represents a new way to experience and enjoy leisure time, being surrounded by the green of nature and the warmth of wood. Outside the ivy will cover in time the entire facade of the building, "hiding" the existing wall and making the openings on the avenue, as if it was a real greenhouse in Reggio Emilia city center. The design for Fitty Wun reflects the playful, sometimes irreverent, personalities of the clients, a couple with three active young boys and a “work hard, play hard” approach to life. The clients desired a house centered on large, light-filled central spaces where the kids and friends of the family would love to hang out today and ten years from now.
