Our client bought an urban terraced house in Aalst that was to be renovated. During the initial discussions, it quickly became clear that there were few demands for the renovation. This gave us the necessary freedom to surprise them. Our biggest challenge was to create enough light and to incorporate a 20° bend in the rear wall into the plan.

On a sloped plot of land in Yokohama, houses tower over the retaining wall on southern edge. On the eastern edge, a house juts against the site. In the winter, there is little sunlight, especially on the ground floor. Therefore, we designed a house that maximized the comfort of each season by setting the sunniest second floor as the "winter living room" and part of the cool shadowy first floor as the "summer living room".

Terraced house transformation
The existing, extreme range is a single-family house from the 1970s burdened with usability and functional shortcomings, resulting from the housing standards of that time, years of accumulation, and modifications. The Investors intended the house to become a comfortable, spacious, modern, and friendly space for an energetic retired couple. The plan, therefore, envisions not so much a correction as a true revolution both inside and outside.

One aesthetic idea driving the creation of Laurel Way was that each room or space should be a jewel box, an individually conceived, precisely functional and dramatic sensory experience with its own depth of architecture. Central to the composition are many of Marc Whipple’s signature elements, one being the use of texture; smooth next to rough stone, rich wooden panels against glass, and glass reflecting water.
