Contemporary Waterfront Home in a Natural Setting
Situated on the Gulf of Finland, this waterfront residence combines minimalist architecture with traditional Tudor elements. The property spans 2 491 m² and includes two buildings: the main house and a guest house with an integrated staff annex and garage. Lanserhof Sylt
Lanserhof Sylt is an exclusive health resort with 68 rooms, which is being built on the site of a former military base on the island of Sylt. The complex comprises a main building with spa and diagnostics area as well as three vacation homes directly on the water. Thatched community library in Ecuadorian Amazon is sublime expression of local culture and building techniques
Quito-based architectural studio Al Borde has completed the Yuyarina Pacha Community Library in Huaticocha. This small community is located in the buffer zone of the Sumaco Biosphere Reserve in the Ecuadorian Amazon. “Yuyarina Pacha” translates as “Space-Time to Think” in Kichwa, a Quechuan language of Ecuador and Colombia. The library’s thatched structure is a sublime expression of local culture and building techniques.

ATTA-Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects has completed a thatch-covered building with a footprint of 15 square meters for the Vitra campus in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The project is the result of an intense study of vernacular architecture and a proposal for the future of sustainable design.

Ingenhoven Associates completes a medical health resort topped by an expansive thatched roof
Dusseldorf-based Ingenhoven Associates has completed a medical health complex for the Austria-based resort company Lanserhof. The project is located within the rolling dunes of Sylt, an island forming part of an archipelago in the North Sea at the Germany-Denmark border. In keeping with the island’s grassy landscape, as well as with much of the island’s regional architecture, Ingenhoven Associates has designed a sinuous building topped by an expansive thatched roof made of reed.

Tane Garden House serves as a symbol of sustainability on Vitra Campus
A new construction on the Weil am Rhein campus of Swiss family-owned furniture company Vitra has been unveiled. The Tane Garden House, designed by Japanese architect Tsuyoshi Tane of Paris-based Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects, is a modest dwelling, a thatched hut raised on squat stone legs.

Dikes protect the Dutch country side from flooding. On top of a dike a little house was built in the 1950s. It fell into disrepair and was sold. The new owners asked Mirck Architecture to design a new dike house, using the beautiful views, daylight, and wood. Mirck proposes to open out the living space to the north, by cracking the dike house volume away from the dike, into the polder landscape.

The outer corner of the crack is fully glazed and brings in plenty of daylight into the large open space. The facades are also open to the best views in the north. The combination of the abundant natural light and the many views, creates a room-in-a-view: the sensation of being part of the landscape.

Located in the small commune of Hermeray, France, this cottage extension and renovation by Nicola Spinetto Architecte is located near a pond and a wooded plateau that is part of the regional natural park of the Haute-Vallée de Chevreuse.
