Siglap Avenue House 1

The difference in levels between the front and back of the site created opportunities for a basement with entry directly from the main road, an elevated guest suite with a private garden and separate access from the rear and a first storey living space that has visual privacy from the main road. There are two entries to the main level: a homecoming one through the basement hallway, and the contemplative access via a series of garden steps flanked by ponds and planters. The L-shape form of the house provides a natural enclosure to a courtyard-like garden enclosed by high retaining walls at the side and rear. The L-shape form also means that every room and corridor has openings to the external. The living, dining and kitchen spaces form an... More

Lotus Avenue House

Incorporating elements of the tropical house in an intermediate terrace house is a totally different challenge from other landed housing types because it has to depend on only the short front and rear facades for natural light and ventilation.  In many intermediate terrace houses, including the conservation shophouse, the airwell is often introduced to bring in daylight and air near the middle section of the house. This house at Lotus Avenue, however, is too long for the front and rear windows to provide sufficient natural light and effective natural ventilation, and also, not long enough to introduce an airwell or courtyard at the centre, without losing too much usable floor area. Our solution was to “pull away” parts of... More

Olive Road House

Set snugly into the very steep terrain, this house hugs the natural contours of the site. In a gesture reminiscent of water pooling and streaming down the slopes of a valley, the house features a series of three ponds. Rain water collected on the roof of the house is channelled into the first and uppermost pond which overflows into a creek down the slope into the second pond, before cascading into the third one at the bottom. At each pond, the water collected is used for irrigation of the garden. Caption The swimming pool is at the heart of this L-shape house, and the path of the rainwater channelling. Caption In response to the existing terrain, numerous steep slopes had to be cut to accommodate the built-in components of the h... More

Rebecca Road House

Formerly concealed at the bottom of the ramp, below the road level, the original house had a little presence or identity. Caption The new house was raised to the street level, giving it a formal guest entrance at the front and a family entrance at the bottom of the driveway, beside the garage. The entry lobby overlooks the high volume semi-outdoor dining patio space which in turn, opens out seamlessly onto the swimming pool. Caption To accentuate the tropical quality of this space, mechanically controlled glass louvres are used to let in daylight while sheltering from the rain. Ventilation is improved by a high-volume low-speed (HVLS) fan which delivers an extra breezy feel. Caption The rear and one side boundary abut siza... More

Trevose Crescent House

The site is elevated one floor above the road level which allows an access directly from the road level into a full basement comprising a large car park, entrance foyer, wine cellar and utility rooms. The form of the house takes on a series of overlapping boxes which emphasize the form of the slopping site. Whilst the expression is unconventional, the concept of tropical living prevails with light and ventilation coming in through courtyards and sheltered openings. Rooms are arranged around the courtyards which vertically connect the four levels of the house. To enhance the experience of arrival, the entry to the main level takes the visitor through water features in a courtyard flanked by granite cladded walls and steel posts. Th... More

Holland Park Conservation House

The existing Art Deco house is gazetted for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. The original main entrance faces away from the main gate of the newly sub-divided plot of land. The challenge was too layout the new additions to the conserved house, in such a way that a new formal entry is created between the existing house and the new block. Caption Caption This was achieved by inserting the new Living Room between the conserved hose and a large existing tree, at once creating the intermediate elements with a character of their own: the main entrance porch adjacent to a pond, and the new timber deck onto which the living room space flow out to. Caption Caption On the opposite side of the conserved house, t... More
