Together they emit a remarkable inviting charm, despite its cold industrial character. One term comes to mind - industrial warmth - dirty old town. Is the bridge a place to be? Why not. A sunset on the bridge is just as spectacular as in the Swiss Alps. You just trade the mountain backdrop for a variety of concrete facades and the view of trains accelerating through the onset of dusk, as if trying to escape the darkness and catch up with the d... University Station, Birmingham

This is a BLASTguard glass balustrade installation by Miller Fabrications at the University Station in Birmingham.  As a busy train station, a top-of-the-range balustrade was required to provide the highest quality of safety. More and more transport locations are upgrading their sites in order to improve the security of the public. This could be as a result of the new upcoming Protect Duty that is coming into force as a result of the terror attack at Manchester Arena in 2017.  Pure Vista Pure Vista developed an anti-terror glass balustrade system with two variations. BLASTguard to withstand a bomb blast and BULLETguard that utilises bullet-proof glass.  The BLASTguard balustrade system was designed in line with Pure V... More

Modern Accord Depot

Revitalizing a storied structure in a small town, a historic train depot gets a new life as a colorful, dynamic dance studio. Brad Feinknopf In the small upstate New York town of Accord, a 1902 train depot remained a local landmark over the years, despite changing times and uses. The historic structure was one of several nearly identical depots dotted along the local train line, many of which remain today. The Accord Depot had many past lives – as a bed and breakfast, and most recently, a restaurant  as a community arts center, an ice cream shop, and most recently, a brief stint as a restaurant – which meant it endured many numerous incomplete and uninspired renovations over the years, slowly falling into disrepair.... Tulum Train Station

The station sits in the beach resort of Tulum, in the Mexican Caribbean, along the Riviera Maya. The primary goal in the design process was to push the sustainability agenda to the foreground and to find in that optimized performance a narrative which would speak about the qualities of pre-Hispanic Mayan Architecture through the use of light, shadows, patterns, materials and vegetation. AIDIA STUDIO   One of the key elements was to minimise the footprint of the station, so after exploring different spatial configurations, an eye-shaped footprint, widest at the centre, where the main functions converge, seemed the most efficient use of space. This was enhanced by stacking the public programme of the station above the platforms de... More

Glenroy Station

Set to eliminate major road congestion issues within the suburb, Australian architecture firm Genton — known for its multi-award-winning Frankston Station — is leading the design of the Glenroy Station project, as recently announced by the Level Crossing Removal Project. “We immediately sensed a strong community culture in Glenroy and, through the significant investment and development involved in the project, we’re thrilled to be able to play a part in seeing that community flourish,” says Genton Principal Jamie McCutcheon. Commissioned by the North West Program Alliance, the project sees the removal of the level crossing at Glenroy Road, through which 19,000 vehicles pass daily. During the peak morning comm... More

Pickering GO Pedestrian Bridge

Located in Pickering just east of Toronto, this major pedestrian bridge over Highway 401 and CN rail lines connects the GO train transit station on the south side to parking and commercial development to the north. Constructed of a simple exposed truss and clad in perforated metal panels, the undulating sculptural form provides dramatic framed views east and west along the highway.  Programmable LED lighting creates vibrant changing light patterns at night.   When Teeple Architects commissioned me, we immediately discussed aerial photography as a way to showcase the sheer length of the pedestrian bridge, as well as the context, from local buildings to the nearby Ontario lake, all the way to the Toronto skyline.   With the... Harderwijk Railway Station

The entire area around the Harderwijk railway station has been overhauled to prepare for the new Randstadspoor metropolitan railway network, which will be integrated in the future. The former single-floor intersection between traces and main traffic structure has been replaced by a new tunnel at a new location. This tunnel connects motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to the various sections of the town, as well as providing access to the railway platforms. The square in front of the railway station links all station-related uses and services and serve to regulate pedestrian traffic. The centre of the square features a staircase, designed in warm and attractive natural stone, further enhances its aesthetic appeal. The wide and low stairs, of... More

Delft City Hall and Train Station

Arriving in Delft is an unforgettable experience. From the outset, Mecanoo’s idea was to design a station that makes it clear to visitors that they have arrived in Delft. The station, in combination with the new city hall, sits atop a new train tunnel built in place of the old concrete viaduct that divided the city in two since 1965.Coming up the escalators, the impressive ceiling with the historic map of Delft unfolds (in collaboration with Geerdes Ontwerpen). When you look outside, you see the city and the old station as a contemporary version of Johannes Vermeer’s painting 'View of Delft’.A vaulted ceiling features an enormous historic 1877 map of Delft and its surroundings, connecting the station with the city hall. Within the stat... More

Rivas-Futura Underground Station [METRO de Madrid]

The building´s architecture is a consequence of the surrounding context and its brief, which includes a new underground station, the public spaces to access the station and two parking areas. Located between two operating underground stations, the building process was determined by the aim of continuing with the train services during the works. The station is placed alongside the existing train rail, with a significant level change both sides of the track. To provide a single hall accessed from the parking areas at both levels in connection with the platforms at the lower level was a design principle. Podium. The design takes advantage of the existing topography to create a two stories station as a podium with a shade covering float... More

Berlin Central Station

On the site of the historic Lehrter Bahnhof Europe’s largest station is presently under construction: This is where an east-west and a north-south InterCityExpress railway line intersect, combined with suburban and underground railway lines. The north-south track runs in a tunnel 15 m below ground level, passing below the Spree and the Tiergarten. The east-west track is located 10 m above street level. The central design principle of the Lehrter Bahnhof is the prominent emphasis of the existing railway tracks in the urban landscape. Large filigree glass roofs as well as two bridging office buildings translate this principle with architectural means. In the central area of the station cross, which rests on a building socle, the ceilings o... More
