Varberg Station is part of a transformation that is reconnecting the Swedish coastal town with the sea. By moving the railway underground, the city has opened up its former harbour area for a new district, Västerport. The station sits at the heart of this change: a gateway for travellers and a new public place for Varberg.
Okidoki’s design draws on the town’s history as a seaside resort. Its expressive, planted roof stretches out over a structure built largely from cross laminated timber. The roof’s lifted corners suggest something caught by the coastal wind, giving the station a character rooted in Varberg rather than in a generic idea of transport architecture.
The building is designed to be approached from every direction. Inside, a generous waiting hall is accompanied by spaces for cafés, restaurants, shops and passenger services, with stairs and lifts connecting to the platforms below. Okidoki designed both the exterior and interior, including integrated artwork developed with artist Juri Markkula.
Opened in July 2025, Varberg Station brings together infrastructure, civic life and the town’s relationship with the coast. Its timber construction and rooftop solar panels are part of the project’s environmental approach.
