Graphic designers put their talents to the design of a bold new office building in Amsterdam

As much logo as building, this office building located on an Amsterdam square was conceived by graphic designers Thonik. In additional to the striking ‘zebra’ like patterns of vertical and horizontal lines, the façade registers a bold staircase. Credit: Ossip Serving also as a new headquarters for Thonik, one of the most successful graphic design agencies in the Netherlands, the building’s overall volume is substantial, with a height of 23 meters and a width of 14 meters. The building is however a mere 8 meters in depth. Credit: Ossip The Amsterdam graphic design studio developed the workspace itself, which is unusual in that the area surrounding has been largely developed in a conventional manner by dev... More

The East Harlem School

The East Harlem School is an independent, not-for-profit, year-round middle school that recruits students from low-income families in East Harlem. The school provides scholarships for all enrolled students. It is the first independent school to have been built in the Harlem community in decades. The school is committed to maintaining an intimate cohort of students, in which each is recognized as an individual and as a contributor to the community.   This dual purpose is echoed in the design of the building. The lower floors, which are linked by a formal public stair visible from the street, contain public spaces: a large cafeteria, gymnasium and entrance lobby. These floors are sheathed in translucent, acid-etched glass through which... More

Naidi Community Hall

Naidi village, located on Vanua Levu in Fiji, had been without a community hall for 7 years, when their previous community hall fell into disrepair and was deemed unsafe for use. In the wake of this, the project came to fruition when a local NGO, the Naqaqa Giving Foundation approached CAUKIN Studio. Serving a village of 400 people and 75 households, the hall’s main function was to provide a space for the community to come together for meetings, celebrations, funerals and weddings. In Fijian culture, the community hall is the cultural and operational heart of a village.    With the collaborative influence of the community, it quickly became clear that the building must provide a space to sing, create local handmade crafts... Fire Station #5

Located in the borough of Pintendre on the outskirts of Lévis, the new 1,500 sq. m. fire station houses eight fire trucks. The concept developed by the architects began with a splitting of the station’s functions, which can be seen by the different volume heights between the garage and the living spaces. The contemporary building is simple in its form and in the materials used, with black aluminum cladding punctuated by silver parts and large glass sections. The entrances are marked by small wooden boxes that continue inside the fire station. These boxes are scaled down in contrast to the rest of the building to bring it closer to a human scale. The interior has been designed to maximise the workspaces and living spaces. The garage has an ab... More

Al Wathba Birdwalk

While there are countless examples of bird watching structures around the world, there are none dedicated to the observation of flamingos in their nesting habitats. Traditional birdwatch structures tend to take enthusiasts up in altitude close to the tree canopies where birds nest and rest. These structures are often located in remote forested areas and tend to be camouflaged to avoid scaring the birds away. For the Al Wathba observation structure, we are presented with a very different challenge, this is not a conventional bird watching tower as Flamingos tend to stay in the ground close to the salty bodies of water which are their food source, building their nests close to the shore. It takes up to thirty days for the eggs to hatch and par... More

Sports and Learning Building

The new building sits between, and connects to, two existing school buildings, improving access to both and providing ‘connective tissue’ for the whole school. To the northwest of the site, a new double-height entrance and reception space is formed at the junction of new and old. Here, Panton House, a two-storey Victorian building has been refurbished to form a new reception and office spaces, linked to the main building by a lightweight glazed bridge. This forms a new ‘porter’s lodge’ style gateway to the school, providing views into the site and allowing the school to engage with the street. Through this entrance, an intimate courtyard is visible and provides a quiet space for study and relaxation. At ground level, a flexible activit... More

Mi Casa

Designing for an architect, by architects, was and always will be a challenge, as we sought to create a practical, functional and timeless home. This trend became key in the conceptual development of the party. Clear volumes and pure geometries gave the design party rationality and harmony. The house was distributed in three blocks: function, connect and dwell. Furthermore, the consistent application of concrete and wood created harmony, as this uniform materiality creates a sense of integration.  The volumes overlap by intersecting the blocks, slab to slab. Only the central mass, which houses the social spaces whose purpose is to connect, is transparent and integrated with the gardens. The initial sketches always showca... More

It takes place on a restored building from the XVIIth century in the historic center of Granada. Its courtyard appearance, similar to a corrala (housing courtyard and open air theatre), let us follow a main strategy; create an interior with theatrical references.  Different essays, articles, poems, stories, novels and plays, written by travelers in relationship with Granada, inspire the way of transformation of each space becoming a scene. Ladies and gentlemen, come in to contemplate, imagine…-Entrance. Loyola Marymount University Life Sciences Building

Los Angeles-based CO Architects designed the Life Sciences Building for Loyola Marymount University (LMU) to address the college’s desire to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. The integration of three project objectives—“interdisciplinary collaboration,” “science on display,” and “sustainability”—informed the design process to produce a building that acts as a daily teaching tool.  Its innovative design—with a play of transparency and solid, and tension between orthogonal and sinuous lines—establishes a new architectural standard for the campus.  Faculty offices and laboratories are based on research focus rather than department.  As a result, the buil...
