STRUCTURELAB ARCHITEKTEN The CENTRUM GROUP develops new vision with STRUCTURELAB ARCHITECTS and brings Oberkassel neighborhood closer to Rhine. A11- Bruges

The integrated approach Between Bruges’ seaport and the city of Bruges itself we find the famous polder landscape of Western Flanders. Villages and farm fields, intersected by ditches, rivers and canals, are surrounded by the expanding port, industrial complexes and motorways. Architects ZJA and landscape architect Bart Smets provided the design and concept for the integration of the new A11 motorway along with all its civil engineering works that connect the hinterland directly to the seaport of Zeebrugge. Blindgänger

Let's start with the location: an industrial area. Trucks move in and out, work is being done. A storage yard and a concrete factory are not exactly watchmaker workshops, they are – or were – rough. The position of manufacturing halls and office containers results from operational planning, urban planning is hardly involved. The location is neither beautiful nor ugly; it's built along functional criteria. (…) The concept for the Blindgänger project, as the authors ambiguously name their work*, proposes a linear space instead of the expected fence (Translator's note: around the cultural workshops). It correctly fulfils the same function (that of separation), but goes on to provide a rich experiential space for the human senses. With the wal... More

CONNECTING TUNNEL VAN HEEKGARAGE

In 2003, the largest underground car park in the Netherlands was constructed in the centre of the city of Enschede, designed by atelier PRO. The parking garage for 1700 cars and 1000 bicycles forms part of an urban planning, created by West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture, for the Van Heekplein, a square that houses various large department stores, a casino and other buildings. To realise a proper survey and orientation, this underground world has been interpreted as a large public space. In the centre of the parking garage, under the Van Heekplein, there is a second square. On this square, the various ‘parking rooms’ are situated, each with their own colour, lighting scheme and lifting points to the shops above. Besides this di... More
