Arched openings dominate Studio Jayga Architects’ British house extension
The young family of a 1930s semi-detached house in Loughton, Essex, wanted to open up the floorplan and add an extension for a new kitchen with a strong connection to the garden.

Studio Jayga Architects reconfigured the internal spaces and added a split-level extension clad with shou-sugi-ban timber.

The split-level allowed the kitchen to be on the level with the slightly lower garden. A linear rooflight connects the existing house with the extension.

A striking pair of arched metal doors combined with a frameless glass box floods the interior with natural daylight. The cantilevered box provides uninterrupted views into the 300 feet garden.

Gluckman Smith Architects’ Font House project – announced as an RIBA Regional Awards winner – is defined by its palette of high quality materials, including pre-weathered brass copper roofing.
Font House is located within a historic walled garden in the grounds of Grade I listed Nevill Holt Hall in Leicestershire, UK. The new house and landscaped garden provide discreet entertainment space, supporting Nevill Holt’s Opera festival, and is at the heart of the owner’s vision of breathing new life into a historic country estate.

Carshalton Boys Sports College
Fraser Brown MacKennaArchitects designed a classroom suite for Carshalton Boys Sports College in South London. The building is clad in perforated and solid Cor-ten panels and utilised off-site manufacture to meet programme, budget, and sustainability requirements.
The new built-for-purpose Maths facility replaced a deteriorating temporary structure, providing eight new flexible classrooms, staff offices and WC facilities within a new 775sqm single storey building. With its intriguing visual aesthetic the new Cor-ten clad facility promotes a positive, modern identity for the department, and provides an improved working environment within.
