Harvest Communities

Conventional residential subdivisions across Southeast Asia frequently prioritize mass earthmoving, clearing natural hydrology and productive soil to install rigid asphalt grids and high-density concrete housing. Harvest Communities presents an alternative masterplan model designed by The Room Architecture and Design, structuring residential expansion around preserved farmland, productive agricultural parcels, and natural contours. The plan prioritizes long-term operational efficiency and resource conservation by integrating living environments into an active agricultural landscape rather than displacing it. Built interventions sit lightly on the terrain, ensuring that natural water channels, soil microbiomes, and agricultural yields remain... More

Circulating Garden — Center of Circular Economy

The Circulating Garden extends the activities of the Center of Circular Economy beyond the building and into its surrounding site. Conceived as both a public garden and an experimental landscape, the project provides spaces for leisure while testing nature-based solutions (NBS) for climate adaptation. Emilio Doiztua Vegetation, water, and shaded areas work together to create a cooler local microclimate and support biodiversity. Several lightweight, demountable structures form open-air rooms for gathering and activities. Conditioned through shade, planting, and water rather than enclosed mechanical systems, these spaces can also function as summer climate refuges during periods of high temperatures. The urban hive: a vertical eco village

The Urban Hive is a vertical eco-village that redefines collective housing by combining productive landscapes, resource efficiency, and shared social infrastructure. Set within a dense urban context, it responds to key challenges such as urban growth, food insecurity, and water scarcity through a self-sustaining and community-oriented living model. The project is organized as a multi-storey structure that accommodates diverse residents while maintaining a clear environmental logic. It uses low-impact materials, passive design strategies, and renewable energy systems to reduce its ecological footprint, while balancing private dwellings with shared communal spaces. nassereddine chaib nassereddine chaib At its core, the design prom... SUNSET PARK DEVELOPMENT

Sunset Park Development is the next generation of condominium living in New York City—an inspiring model for what’s possible when sustainability, design, and profitability converge. Efecan Zeybek & Ceren Kalayci Targeting a new generation of buyers, the design goes well beyond conventional sustainability by introducing an urban roof farm where dwellers can grow their produce in planting beds and a winter garden year-round. The farm will offer educational classes led by horticultural specialists on composting, rainwater collection, and gardening basics to help grow vegetables without pesticides and microplastics. Efecan Zeybek & Ceren Kalayci Despite incentives under Local Law 97, the vast majority... More

Agrotopia

Agrotopia, a rooftop greenhouse in Roeselare, Belgium, is the largest research center in Europe dedicated to urban food production. Designed by van Bergen Kolpa Architects in collaboration with Meta architectuurbureau, the project demonstrates the potential of rooftop horticulture. With its glass facades, prominent entrance staircase, and layered functions, the building investigates intensive space use, circular energy and water systems, and approaches to making greenhouse cultivation more sustainable. Agrotopia is located on the roof of a fruit and vegetable auction facility along the ring road of Roeselare, a hub for produce distribution in West Flanders. With wide views over the city and surrounding area, the project positions urban hor... More

Harvesting Station

A device for the reactivation of the unused part of the city. Urban agriculture is a practice that always coexisted within the city and its historical development. In recent times, this practice revamped as a form of engagement of urban communities in local food production. However, contemporary urban agriculture has to deal with new phenomena that historically did not compromise the quality and the health of the food produced in the city: the air pollution. The Harvesting Station is an urban device designed to activate the interstitial spaces of the city and turn them productive. It can grow up to 200 plants in four square meters by keeping them protected from animals and air pollution. The greenhouse is conceived in a wood framewor... More
