Set within a dense urban context, it responds to key challenges such as urban growth, food insecurity, and water scarcity through a self-sustaining and community-oriented living model. Agrotopia, a rooftop greenhouse in Roeselare, Belgium, is the largest research center in Europe dedicated to urban food production. Designed by van Bergen Kolpa Architects in collaboration with Meta architectuurbureau, the project demonstrates the potential of rooftop horticulture. With its glass facades, prominent entrance staircase, and layered functions, the building investigates intensive space use, circular energy and water systems, and approaches to making greenhouse cultivation more sustainable. A device for the reactivation of the unused part of the city. Urban agriculture is a practice that always coexisted within the city and its historical development. In recent times, this practice revamped as a form of engagement of urban communities in local food production. However, contemporary urban agriculture has to deal with new phenomena that historically did not compromise the quality and the health of the food produced in the city: the air pollution.
