The restaurant Kiang, located in a historic building in the center of Vienna, was designed by Helmut Richter in 1984. At the time of its opening it represented a radically new approach to interior design, especially compared to the dominant style of Chinese restaurants with dark wood and red lampions.Although it lacked the traditional Viennese „Gemütlichkeit“, it expressed a new sensitivity and became immediately an architectural icon. 34 years later the owners hired architects Tillner & Willinger for the remodelling of the historic room, contemporary illumination and the design of an extension. Messecarree B is a ten-storey student dorm in the second district of Vienna. The shared facilities (Learning Lounge, seminar rooms) as well as commercial premises (Restaurants, Start-Up offices, Fitness Center) are located on two elevated basement levels of the building.These basement levels are spanned by redsidential floors and can be entered either via the plaza or a surrounding green landscape.Three staircases as well as elevators are placed in the center and on either side of the building with the main entrance on the north-eastern side connecting the plaza level.The inner and outer staircases are inserted through the glazed fassace and connect both sides with each other. The office building lies on the edge of bustling Praterstern square and traffic circle in the immediate vicinity of Vienna Prater, the most attractive open space resource in the city. The eight-storey building is organized into two main building volumes – one running along the railway tracks, the other along Nordbahnstrasse. The forms are bridged by clasp-like transparent spaces which house the main circulation area and meeting rooms, intended as flexible areas for informal communication and socializing. The Vienna Terraces are one of the new design measures developed in the Vienna Valley Urban Development Plan that addresses the urgent localized need to provide more public open space for the 5th and 6th Viennese districts. Bridging over the entrenched U4 subway line, the terraces expand the existing public space directly to the edge of the Vienna River. The pedestrian and cycling routes along the south bank of the Vienna River are reconceived as a welcoming, linear public space with recreational and social qualities. Timeless Architecture in Dialogue with the City Schenker Salvi Weber and feld72 shape the new corporate headquarters of Post AG on Vienna’s Rochusmarkt. The building ensemble is a composition of the highest quality which not only skilfully combines old and new but also features contemporary interior architecture which is distinguished by the open communication areas in the offices and the design of the mall.
