AQ1 Althan Quartier Francis

Located at Vienna’s Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, AQ1 Althan Quartier Francis transforms a late twentieth-century railway station into a contemporary mixed-use urban district while retaining the architectural value and embodied carbon of the existing structure. The project by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects and Josef Weichenberger Architekten demonstrates how large-scale regeneration can prioritise adaptive reuse over demolition, balancing environmental responsibility with changing urban requirements. Rather than replacing the station complex, the intervention builds upon its structural logic, creating a more permeable and publicly accessible neighbourhood centre. Gebhard Sengmüller   Adaptive reuse as a sustainabi... More

feld72 completes contextually sensitive infill townhouse development in Vienna

Caption feld72 feld72 designed a new building that incorporates the half-timbered house (originally built in 1907), creating a productive infill solution. Goldener Papagei

Belgrade. When Zlatni Papagaj („Golden Parrot“) – the first all’italiana coffee bar in the city – opened its doors in 1979, its great success began to pave the way for Italian coffee culture and lifestyle in the former federal capital of Yugoslavia.   David Schreyer David Schreyer Following many examples in Trieste, the interior was reduced to the essentials — only a single bar made of metal stands out as the centerpiece of the venue: the coffee machine. Seating areas were left out completely. Almost four decades later, Nathan Spacić – son of the original founder – is paying tribute to the place that was a symbol of lightness and joy of life for its guests, by realizing his v... More

Restaurant Kiang

The restaurant Kiang, located in a historic building in the center of Vienna, was designed by Helmut Richter in 1984. At the time of its opening it represented a radically new approach to interior design, especially compared to the dominant style of Chinese restaurants with dark wood and red lampions.Although it lacked the traditional Viennese „Gemütlichkeit“, it expressed a new sensitivity and became immediately an architectural icon. 34 years later the owners hired architects Tillner & Willinger for the remodelling of the historic room, contemporary illumination and the design of an extension. The new central room features the atmosphere of a dining kitchen where guests can watch the preparation of cold dishes. A new... More

Messecarree Wien

Praterstern

The office building lies on the edge of bustling Praterstern square and traffic circle in the immediate vicinity of Vienna Prater, the most attractive open space resource in the city. The eight-storey building is organized into two main building volumes – one running along the railway tracks, the other along Nordbahnstrasse. The forms are bridged by clasp-like transparent spaces which house the main circulation area and meeting rooms, intended as flexible areas for informal communication and socializing. An existing fixed public passage, that connects the train station with the adjacent district, cuts the ground floor in two and presented an interesting design challenge. In response, the ground floor is left partially accessible to t... More

Wied135 - 15 years - living facade

Adieu Tristesse - this motto stands for the project Wiedner Hauptstraße No. 135. In the middle of the rather murky perimeter block development near the Gürtel lives the building with the seasons. For the past 15 years, the natural climate envelope has changed, forming a filter between dynamic urban space and the building.Nature and architecture complement each other, with the common goal - to provide comfort for the residents. Rational is the architecture: A building structure with its standardization and prefabrication enables variable floor plans of different sizes and uses. From the vertical green space over the loggias to the actual apartment, the entire depth of the house can be experienced. Rational is also the option to combine diffe... More
