Flint House

Brief SkeneCatling de la Peña were asked simply to respond to a site in the grounds of Waddesdon, a large Estate in Buckinghamshire, with a building initially intended for the curator of a new archive building. The Flint House consists of three bedrooms, a dining room, kitchen, library and study, with a self-contained annex studio, of 465 and 115 sqm respectively. Design Flint is a quartz related to obsidian, and is found only in the chalk seam that extends from the south coast to Norfolk. Flint is an ancient material related to jasper, obsidian and onyx; a hard, cryptocrystalline form of quartz found in one geological seam in the UK, and in abundance on the surface of the ploughed fields surrounding the site. The architecture was gene... More

Cornwall Gardens

This project offers opportunities to reinterpret the ‘Good Class Bungalow’ (GCB). The GCB is a niche category of landed houses in Singapore, often associated with high-end landed housing for the privileged few. There are specific planning guidelines to safeguard the qualities of these houses. The minimum plot size has to be 1400 sqm. The ‘site coverage’, which refers to the building foot print, shall not exceed 35% of the site area. Intended for a family of four generations, this project relooks at ways of enhancing the joy of tropical living, of enlivening communal living in a contemporary, tropical setting, where family members reside in a home of interconnected social spaces. This house is located along Cornwall Gardens, wit... More

Tower House

S+P and their 8 year old twin sons asked for a home “for community, art and nature to come together”. We designed them a village. WHAT? Tower House is a renovation and extension to a weatherboard home in Alphington, Victo-ria, Australia. We restored the original, where we have two kids’ rooms, a bathroom and living spaces. A studio, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and dining occupy the new part of the house. Tower House is the result of endless conversations with a trusting, enthusiastic, patient and encouraging client. A large aggressive piece of contemporary architecture would be an imposition in this context. Our proposition was to create a series of small structures of a scale and texture that did not dominate its context. Two kids ro... More

With 3 Kids, 2 Dogs and the Jungle

The project brief was to design a single family house for a family (parents, 3 daughters and 2 dogs) to enjoy spending time together and also appreciate each daughter’s personal space to feel outdoor experience likes a scout campsite. Spaces for 3 daughters are the main idea for this house as an independent space, dwelling unit at the center of house, connected to family space, toward a conceptual idea of “House in House” or interpenetration space which interact with family space. The kid’s room is separated 3 independent living units but able to access by sliding screen panels to build their strong relationships with their sisters. This room is direct to the sky above. Skylight with aluminum louvered roof infuses the bedroom space with... More

HIZA

The pre-existing traditional Zagorje cottage is situated on the green slopes near Kumrovec and was structurally and statically in poor condition. It was renovated taking into consideration the characteristics of local heritage and design. The pre-existing house form is kept, while the porch is substituted with a glass cube. To give the cottage southern exposure, the glass form is slided out of the main house volume, simultaneously forming an entrance area. Interaction of interior and exterior spaces is enabled by opening of the glass walls. The cottage consists of three floors: the basement, ground floor and 1st floor, which is comprised of the essential living spaces- leisure/dining/cooking on groundfloor and sleeping areas on th... Kangaroo House

This house is for two families. One is parents generation, and the other is son’s family. In Korea, when the son gets marriage, he live in a separate house. But in our client’s case, they want to live in a same “house” instead of an apartment housing, the most typical residence type in Korea. Therefore, the son bought the land, the parents built the house for the two families. The house has to be a single house with two houses within. So, we borrow the concept of kangaroo, the Australian animal. Kangaroo carries its baby in the pocket at the tummy. Just like that, the parents’ house contains the son’s house. The parents’ house is made of black brick, and the son’s house is made of wood. Kangaroo house is divided into four parts with the... More
