Weekend House in the Woods

The house was designed for a couple seeking a weekend get-away in the woods to balance their busy everyday lives in the Czech capital. The site is located near Žloukovice village in a protected landscape area Křivoklátsko. Decades ago, a community of „tramps“, young people influenced by E. T. Seton’s woodcraft movement, used to build small cabins in the local woods. A row of such cabins formed a small settlement  the middle of a large forest near Žloukovice . Stone and View House

The house is located in the southwest section of the mountain town of Arachova, a popular winter destination, in close distance to the archeological site of Delphi in Central Greece. Originally built in 1989, it underwent an extended remodeling as to become a weekend getaway for a family of four, their relatives, and friends while serving as a ‘base’ for winter sports. Caption The house’s exterior was stripped-off of picturesque elements such as wooden canopies, railings, shutters, and arbitrary structures, while all existing window frames were removed for being recycled. Weekend House

The project of the house in Colares stared with a topographical research in mind, finding the most dramatic cliff between Cascais and Cabo da Roca, for a weekend house, on the west coast of Portugal, at the closest point to the Americas on European land. The site is located in the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais, just between the famous Lighthouse of Cabo da Roca and the nearby Santuário da Peninha, it is part of a territory which is constellated by windmills and local production of wine. ALD House

This weekend retreat is projected on a land of little over 1,000 square meters and it is articulated in two main volumes: a prism into which another rectangular wooden prism is embedded.   Since the very beginning, the purpose of this project was clear: to create a house in which a balance between modernity and coziness was struck. Therefore, we chose to use few materials in order to achieve a quick reading of the volumes.   The first prism consists of a black metal structure that ends on an exposed concrete staple.
