White architecture

Casa Dafne is on a corner plot between Carvoeiro and Ferragudo, on the Algarve coast. It is on a gentle south-facing slope, with views stretching towards the horizon, where the sea and sky meet. The house is called Casa da Ria as it is near the Alvor Estuary, over which it has panoramic and ever changing views due to the varying tides. The plot is extensive and slopes steeply to the north-west, where the wide views open up to the east and south and the light intensifies. Here, the outdoor spaces and shadows become more appealing, to enjoy the delights of a mild climate, all year round. Although the urban regulations for this area allow the construction of 3 floors from ground level up, it was decided to build just 2 floors in order to achieve more horizontality and a smooth connection with the surrounding landscape. In this way, the visual impact is reduced. Casa Morena is situated on a plot with verdant pine trees, a place where the view becomes lost in the green of the surrounding area and the immense blue of a bay. The pine trees mark the site and have influenced the planning and reticulated design of the house. Some of the schist, used to build the solid walls, was removed from the site. These walls mark the house’s foundation, which is deconstructed into walls that become lower and lower, becoming separate from the house and merging into the garden. The project is for a building, on the corner of a block, built on the site of an old two-storey house which had been demolished.  The building is an integral part of the urban fabric inside Lagos town walls and is opposite the Church of St Sebastião. The building was therefore built from the ground up, to be a home for a couple with children, for them to live in a densely built, but quiet, area of the historic town centre. The house is located near the Black sea town of Sozopol and is situated on a plot with panoramic sea view. The old house was built around 15 years ago in a style imitating the authentic for Sozopol architectural elements and materials: multitude of inclined roofs with tiles, facade planking and tile cladding, bay-windows and arches.
