IDOM revamps an old military industry building into a vibrant and playful sports centre
An early 20th-century military industry building was transformed into a large sports complex as a result of an ideas competition. Designed by IDOM, the project aims to retain the value and character of the old structure while interposing it with fresh, colourful and light elements.

The polychrome structure is flooded with light through the glazed sawtooth roof, imitating the opulence and grandeur of an industrial cathedral. The old, previously grey floor now comprises diverse bright-coloured sports areas, namely athletics, badminton, basketball, handball and climbing, giving it a distinct look.

Blanket of Steel: A terraced passive house in Brussels by atelier tom vanhee
Destroyed by a fire, this house in Brussels, Belgium has been redesigned by atelier tom vanhee as a passive, environmentally conscious home with a community purpose at its heart.

Unifying the exterior, both the facades and sloping roof have been re-clad with white metal sandwich panels with a high insulation value. Inside, the architects retained as many materials as possible that were not destroyed by the fire and new materials were chosen in an environmentally conscious way.

Kuopio Museum extension adds a light and contemporary layer to a rich architectural context
Clad with a white, folded metal facade, this striking extension by Architects Davidsson Tarkela functionally and programmatically connects the existing Kuopio Museum of Cultural History, the Museum of Natural History and an existing library. Hovering over the glass entrance door, the reticulated façade adds a contemporary, light layer to the rich layers of historic build fabric that surround.
