Kyushu
Robust scales, versatile and contemporary
Kyushu has a robust pattern with large scales. After the wood has been carefully charred by our fire masters Kyushu is brushed and treated afterwards. This makes the robust scales clearly visible.Kyushu is made from Pinus Radiata, a fast-growing pine species from FSC® certified forests in New Zealand. The wood is thermally modified by heating it up to 230° Celsius. Because of this process, the wood type has a durability class 1 (EN350) certification. Kyushu has a lifespan of at least 30 years.

Wasa Student Village
The area of Sloterdijk, west of the city centre of Amsterdam, is undergoing a radical transformation. As a result of the 2008 financial crisis this initially mono-functional office area suffered high rates of vacancy. The lack of housing and public amenities lead to a decay of the environment as a whole. Reacting to the housing shortage crisis, the city of Amsterdam formulated a new zoning plan transforming vacant office buildings into short-stay apartments and allowing for additional 1,500 to 2,000 new dwellings to be built.

Detail: sliding panels of natural pine protect a residential complex from the Mallorcan sun
Spanish architecture firm OHLAB has recently completed Paseo de Mallorca 15, a residential complex on a V-shaped corner site in its native Palma, Mallorca. The project is defined by a unique textured facade of sliding panels with a lattice of natural wooden slats. This adaptable brise soleil serves as a secondary outer layer, effectively filtering the intense Mediterranean sunlight to lessen solar heat gain on the building while preserving outward views from the apartments onto the cityscape. The design, according to the architects, draws inspiration from the pergolas and shutters peppered about the Mediterranean island.

Children's Forest by Takashige Yamashita Office paints a living canvas of nature and architecture
Nestled on a serene, forested hillside near Mount Fuji, the Children’s Forest, designed by Takashige Yamashita Office, goes beyond being a nursery school. It is a light-filled haven immersed in the grace of the surrounding natural landscape.

The design takes cues from the canopy of the lush Hinoki trees that embrace the site, with their branches filtering light, casting enchanted bubbles of light on the forest floor. The design unfolds as a series of individual cubical units resting on varying ground levels, with ample daylight poured from different openings. The undulating terrain, with slopes and a hill rising to 3-4 meters on the site's western side, became an integral element that the architects preserved.

Arkylab, a Mexico-based firm, spatially brings together the smell of coffee, textures of the earth walls, and wooden and metal envelope in visual synthesis with the surrounding vegetation in this coffee shop project in Aguascalientes.

Located in the northern part of the city, the 250sqm space deploys an architectural program that spreads over two levels housing a speciality cafe. The cafe entrance is marked by a rammed earth wall that encloses all the elements of that level while directing the users towards the central interior space.

Shodoshima
For Shodoshima, the wood is cut parallel to the annual rings (Dosse). This gives Shodoshima a beautiful flame pattern. The planks are charred in our own oven. The wood is then brushed and treated again. The robust and lively grain structure is clearly visible and gleams beautifully in the sun. Shodoshima is resistant to all weather conditions and does not stain.
After charring and brushing, Shodoshima is treated with our Bito Black. Bito Black provides good protection against water, dirt, mould and other deposits. We recommend repeating this treatment every 3 to 5 years.
