The architectural and design company ParaleloZero had the task of designing an office for a company that created an online platform for senior residence, home support and social centres called Arowana. The objective of the project was to create a personalised workspace that focused on the comfort and well-being of the employees and staff. To achieve this, the company utilised the an cient Chinese practice of Feng-Shui. The residential building from the 1960s no longer met contemporary requirements, neither visually, ecologically, nor in terms of the room layout. A conversion would not have been profitable, so we decided to demolish the house down to the basement and build a new two-storey wooden construction on top. The new building is based on the previous volume and floor space. Even the small recess of the south facade follows the trace of the old house. The preserved basement serves as a plinth and offers space for bicycle, storage and technical rooms. Located in a small village in Beira Baixa, the project House in Vale de Abelha resulted from the need to renovate and expand the pre-existing housing structure with typical vernacular features, adapting it to modern spatial and building requirements. The pre-existing structure – a pet and farming produce shop on the ground floor and a residential upper floor – houses the new private rooms (bedrooms, sanitary facilities and laundry room), while the new volumetric area houses the social rooms (living and sitting rooms, kitchen and technical area), seeking to integrate it into the landscape through the use of noble and natural materials such as wood or stone.
