Fausto Ferrara is an Italian architect, artist and author whose research crosses architecture, plastic arts and the theory of form. Kenneth Frampton places his work within the critical tradition of tectonic culture, in a lineage extending through Scarpa, Ando and Zumthor: an architecture in which matter, gravity, light, place and construction are not expressive devices, but conditions through which form acquires necessity.
Ferrara defines his practice through the concept of the Inhabitable Work: architecture not as a typological product or image, but as a unity of thought, space, matter and construction.
This continuity is evident in Casa 1 in Formentera, a predominantly hypogeal 1,850 sqm Work rooted in the rock of the Mediterranean landscape and built at approximately €4,890/sqm, and in the Temple of Silence, a private sacred pavilion conceived as a total spatial work for one of the most important dynasties in Italian fashion culture.
In both works, the scale of the commission does not alter the principle: architecture emerges from the place and is carried through to built matter without separating conception from execution.
Since 2004, Arckeo has provided the executive structure through which Ferrara’s works are engineered and developed. Arckeo does not operate as a second authorial centre, but strictly as the Executive Workshop supporting Fausto Ferrara, coordinating engineering, specialist disciplines and executive development so that technical complexity does not interrupt the unity of the Work.
Ferrara determines the Work. The Executive Workshop makes its construction possible.
