JOI-Design has specialized in hospitality design since 1984. Our expertly skilled team of interior, product and graphic designers; architects; engineers; and artists creates exceptional hotels, restaurants and spas, each of which are fashioned with an individual style that emphasises the project’s special qualities.
As one of Europe's leading interior architecture practices, JOI-Design brings to life luxurious hotels around the globe – without denying the team’s German heritage. Our enthusiastic Hamburg-based studio also creates bespoke boutique hotels and independent restaurants in German-speaking countries.
With our feet planted solidly in the ground but our heads above the clouds, JOI-Design is reaching for the stars. Shaped by the principles of European culture, authenticity and contemporary elegance, our projects are proof of our firm belief that outstanding design is a hotel’s best concierge. A distinctive ambience makes a hotel feel comfortable yet exciting, casual yet elegant; with this understanding, our practice’s daily work is supported by decades of experience from over 40 of Europe’s most talented designers. The team excels at evoking emotions through a built environment’s design, thereby creating an atmosphere where guests love to linger – and which they are excited to return to time and again.
JOI-Design’s approach to hospitality intertwines the unique provenance of a place and its local culture with the core values endorsed by a brand’s guidelines. Our designers’ passion for continuous improvement drives us to partner with professionals specialising in new materials, colour, lighting, furniture design and architecture so that each project is individually tailored. Concepts are also shaped through our members’ awareness of the world around them. The constantly changing needs of our society are put under a microscope and analysed through the lens of travel, hospitality, tourism and technological developments – ensuring that the best solutions are achieved not only for today but for the years to come.
Functionality informed by a wealth of expertise is what builds the foundation for our designs and enables us to deliver outstanding results. Atmosphere is the playground for our creative souls who delight in finding imaginative answers. Together, these are what JOI-Design does best: Shaping Atmosphere!

Thanks to years of experience in the hotel, gastronomy, and wellness / fitness / leisure industries, as well as developing themed concepts for major hospitality projects, JOI-Design has extensive expertise in developing tailored strategies which harmonise the functionality concerns of operators, the budgetary requirements of investors, and each project’s marketing aspirations. Peter Joehnk has 30 years of hotel expertise, and Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk has 20 years of professional experience in hospitality design.
Guided by JOI-Design’s decades of knowledge and its core principle of "Shaping Atmosphere", the team is devoted to creating specific, individualised solutions for guestroom and public area concepts. The studio follows the firm belief that a hotel’s design is its best advertisement for achieving outstanding, memorable, and long-lasting results - and not just an artistic end in itself!
In close coordination with building services, kitchen engineers, architects, contractors and consultants, JOI-Design provides meticulous documentation to expedite a project’s implementation. The resulting plans form the basis for drawings in tender packages and also facilitate construction supervision.
Tender management / Call for tenders:
Calls for tender are made according to the German principle of detailed estimate (including bill of quantities), or by applying the Anglo-Saxon principle of tender package for general contractors, which uses detailed material and product specifications as well as exact drawings, but no bill of quantities. International diversification guarantees the best possible prices in the global market.
Supervision of construction / Site Management:
If desired by the client, JOI-Design’s experienced site managers take charge of the entire coordination of the various trades involved in the construction regarding scheduling, costs and quality. Otherwise, the studio adopts a narrower remit for project supervision, ensuring artistic integrity, compliance with the agreed design concept, and quality control of craftsmanship.
