Tono Mirai architects

Tono Mirai was born in Sendai in 1962. In 1995, she founded Tono Mirai Architects.

After her family members fell ill, she started out by designing her own home and office, the Kanda SU/Nest House, designed to provide a sense of comfort. She then became an architect specializing in modern organic earth architecture. Her designs are characterized by a fluidity that differs from modern concepts of space, and she aims to create architecture that can change and regenerate over time, based on the ancient Japanese idea of "JINEN." She advocates sustainability by using locally produced natural materials, and has received various international awards for her achievements in liberating herself from industrial materials and processes and demonstrating the modern use of traditional techniques, and has participated in lectures and conferences in Japan and Europe.
