Dalit Lilienthal Interior Design Studio in Tel Aviv, Israel, recently completed a fresh 'boho chic' renovation to an 80 SQM apartment in the centre of Tel Aviv. The studio is known for using simplicity as a guiding principle and playing with layout as the key driver in how a space functions.
Aesthetically, the client brief called for a relaxed vacation style feel. Functionally, it called for the addition of an extra bathroom and comfortable workspace area for the parents, and renovations to their child's room such that it could accommodate a sibling in the future.
Given the small envelope, storage solutions were also key. In addition to space for items already in the home such as clothing, appliances, and insuite washer/dryer, the clients wanted additional storage for larger items such as a baby carriage, a scooter, folding chairs and more. After reviewing the logistics Lilienthal chose a 'boho chic' theme to guide the project.
He sought to create harmony between functional and aesthetic elements, using warm materiality alongside shades of whites and prioritizing natural or simple materials such as raw wood, raw and rough concrete, steel, rattan, and foliage.
Prior to renovation, the apartment was closed in and dark. A wall sat between the kitchen and living areas and the layout was in the style of an older apartment and not conducive to the living needs of a young family.
Lilienthal removed the wall to open the kitchen and living into one space and dramatically restructured the layout. Carpentry solutions were customized to the space, such as a signature long wood and concrete seating bench installed under a large window to maximise natural light. The bench doubles as a storage area containing under seat drawer and shelf storage options.
Desks, shelving, and storage spaces were also custom created to match in both tone and materiality, with wooden bed headboards and cupboard handles used to add design detail and tie the beachy vibe of the rooms to a practical and functional theme.
Rattan 'chandeliers', large windows and a variety of potted plants bring nature and light into the space, with floors redone in concrete and timber to further brighten up the formerly dreary interior. Area rugs, throws, and unusual industrial chic art pieces complete the new, open air bohemian vibe and bring the apartment firmly into a fresh, relaxed, and thoroughly contemporary iteration.
