Aula Magna del Politecnico di Torino

Aula Magna del Politecnico di Torino

The Aula Magna of the Polytechnic was built in the postwar period after the bombs of the Second World War had destroyed the original site. Although built with quality materials (it was entirely covered with white marble from Carrara), no longer met the needs of the contemporary world. Narrow, high windows were located on both sides, coatings that provoked strong sound reverberations and old folding wooden seats were some of the original elements. The compositional and technological solutions have led the current Aula Magna at the forefront in the world. Every Monday night are held concerts of classical music, and has quickly become the favorite place from musicians for their performances. Recently, a study by a concertplayer, a physicist and a sound engineer have proven to be one of the ideal places for the acoustics.

The slight ceiling in metal mesh, changed the geometry and form and hides the technological systems and lighting. The stage (built by experienced editors RAI) as well as serving as a sounding board, is shaped to accommodate shows and dissertations. The tall windows were closed to avoid annoying visual interference. Acoustic mirrors and cleverly positioned soundproof walls make the acoustics equal anywhere in the room, we sit down. The machines with air handling units are positioned on the flat roof in a lightweight metal structure covered with corrugated iron, which values the formal and aesthetic aspect of the rear façade of the building.

The access to the Aula Magna is through two continuous rows of panic doors porthole, or through a transparent lift structural purposes since it has replaced a pillar of the structure. To complete the choices is the dominant red color, in the strictest European tradition of theater halls.
