A centrally located apartment/ fire brigade building in Schagen (The Netherlands) has been equipped with a Gorter roof hatch combined with the Gorter scissor stairs. The roof hatch provides safe and certified roof access for general maintenance purposes and also provides access to the technical installations of the elevator in the building.

For the project a deliberate choice has been made to use a roof hatch with scissors stairs. The combination ensures that in a normal situation the limited space under the roof hatch remains free and is walkable. In this way, the access to the elevator doors is not blocked. When entering the roof, the entire way to the roof is provided with a safe hold. The scissor staircase has a automatically extending handrail and the roof hatch features the characteristic yellow Gorter hand rail.

With the scissor stairs, heights of up to 3.5 meters can be bridged and there are also extension elements available that can safely bridge the gap in the plenum by adding an additional 2-4 steps to the stairs.
