GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI DESIGN COMPETITION

CONCEPT DESCRIPTION

The Guggenheim Helsinki Museum is planned as a transparent building to fulfil the promise of the spectacular site.

The North facade is gradueted to obtain maximum natural light without sun exposure and the panorama of the old town with the cathedral and the harbor is in the museum present like a painting by Canaletto.

The to the north rising building resembles a ship's bow and has again vertical incisions to bring in adition northern lights through skylights in the building.

Inspiration for the maritime colours blue and white was the flag of Finland. The geometric resolution of the facades in triangles reminds of sailing boats.

The structure is simple and tried the reduced form language of Skandinavian to match. The facade panels are metal core plates. They reflect the sky, the waves and the ever chanching weather.

The project is following the parameters of sustainability and energy saving efficiency.
